Gophers Fall to No. 6 Tennessee

2/15/2019 6:07:00 PM | Softball

CLEARWATER, FLA. - The University of Minnesota Gophers fell 4-2 against No. 6/6 University of Tennessee at the St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational this afternoon.

"It was a good game. It's a game of execution and we had a couple plays that got away from us," head coach Jamie Trachsel said. "We had chances to win and we know that. We will keep hammering the things that we believe in."

The Gophers got on the board early with an aggressive start. Ellee Jensen led off with a single and moved around to third on a sacrifice bunt and a fly out. With two outs on the board Maddie Houlihan stole second and Jensen flew home for the first run of the day on a double steal.

"That's part of our game," Trachsel said. "I thought the defense gave us something there and it was executed well. We are right there with these top-10 teams. We are a good program and we feel like we belong on any stage."

The Gophers held onto the lead early as Amber Fiser struck out five batters in a row in the first two innings but Tennessee answered in the bottom of the third. They put two on base took a 3-2 lead with one swing of the bat on a home run to center field.

In the top of the fifth Minnesota chipped away at the lead. Allie Arneson battled to a full count walk and was brought home by a Jensen single. The Gophers closed the door in the bottom of the fifth to stay within one. Fiser recorded two strikeouts and Emma Burns caught a runner stealing. She threw to Arneson covering second from shortstop for the big out.

Tennessee tacked on one more run in the bottom of the sixth scoring on an RBI single. The Gophers put one on in the top of the seventh but were not able to do anything with it.

Fiser went the distance for the Gophers with eight strikeouts. She only allowed two earned runs and is now 1-2 on the early season despite a 1.24 ERA.

Minnesota falls to 2-2 on the season and will play two games tomorrow. They take on Notre Dame at 3 p.m. CT and then will take on the reigning national champions, No.1/2 Florida State, at 6:30 p.m. CT on ESPN 3.
