New Mexico Quiets Minnesota Bats on Day Two in Arizona

2/16/2019 11:13:00 PM | Baseball

SURPRISE, Ariz. – A night after the Gopher Baseball team rallied in the late innings for a season opening win, New Mexico silenced Minnesota's attempt at an encore, knocking off the Gophers 11-1 at the College Baseball Classic at Surprise Stadium on Saturday night.

Lobos starter Nathaniel Garley kept Minnesota (1-1) off balance in 7.0 innings of work, striking out six while allowing just one earned run on three hits.

"[Garley] commanded three pitches and both sides of the plate and did a great job of competing," head coach John Anderson said after the game. "We didn't necessarily have many quality at-bats. We got away from our core philosophy of trying to go up there and be ready to hit the fastball. We got caught up in trying to hit three pitches. When you do that, it's difficult to hit."

The Gopher defense did itself little favor, committing four errors, while New Mexico (1-1) got strong offensive outings from Jared Mang and Tanner Baker, each of whom went 4-for-5 with two doubles in the game. Mang drove in four runs on the day.

The Lobos took advantaged of Minnesota's defensive missteps, knocking Patrick Fredrickson (0-1) from the game after just 4.0 innings, allowing five runs but just two earned on eight hits. Fifth-year senior left-handed Jeff Fasching entered in the fifth, allowing just two hits and one unearned run in 2.1 innings of work. The Lobos piled on late, scoring six runs (two earned) in the final three innings.

Offensively, Eli Wilson reached base twice in the game with a single and a walk. Cole McDevitt drove in the Gophers' only run in the fourth, scoring Wilson. Drew Hmielewski entered as a defensive replacement and singled in the ninth, when the Gophers loaded the bases but could not score against the Lobos' Tristin Lively.

QUOTABLE
"We'll take what happened out there tonight and try to learn from it. It's going to be a work in progress. That's why I like to play good competition because it exposes some of the things you need to improve. That's our goal here to come back tomorrow and have a good pregame and batting practice, get some work done in all three phases, and get ready to play an outstanding Oregon State team."- Anderson, on bouncing back from a tough loss

NOTABLE
Four Gophers made their collegiate debuts in the game: infielder Zack Raabe, catcher Chase Stanke, utility player Andrew Wilhite, and right-handed pitcher J.P. MasseyBen Mezzenga saw his streak of 33-consecutive games reaching base come to a close, as well as his 14-game hitting streak … McDevitt now leads the Gophers with a hit in four straight while reaching base in 10 consecutive games.

UP NEXT
Minnesota continues action at the College Baseball Classic in Surprise on Sunday as the Gophers take on No. 8 Oregon State (2-0) at Surprise Stadium. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. MT.
