Mizzou Downs Minnesota 4-3 In Neutral Site Match
The Golden Gophers' women's tennis team was downed by Mizzou 4-3 in a neutral site match in Memphis, Tenn. It has been exactly a year to the date since the Gophers and Tigers last matched up with their last dual resulting in a similar 4-3 heartbreaker. The Maroon and Gold will take on the Memphis Tigers tomorrow, Feb. 17 at 10am CT.
"Close battle today but unfortunately we came up just short at the end in a few third sets" head coach Catrina Thompson said. "We have Memphis tomorrow so our attention turns to them and getting ourselves ready for another tough match."
Doubles
Doubles proved to be the strong suit of the Gophers as they secured the early 1-0 lead after two, 6-3 victories from the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. The combo of Caitlyn Merzbacher and Cammy Frei continued their dominance in the top spot for the Gophers and improved their doubles record to a perfect 4-0 on the year with their win over Mizzou's duo of Middlebrooks and Wright.
Singles
As the most consistent piece of the Golden Gophers' lineup, Tiffany Huber and Bita Mancera saw the only singles wins of the day. Despite going up 3-0 with victories out of the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, the Gophers would fall in the four remaining matches, three of which went to third sets.
Up Next
Although Memphis was outplayed by Mizzou in yesterday's 4-3 loss, expect a similar level of competition as the Gophers look to get back on the right foot. Similar to Mizzou, it has been exactly a year since the two teams faced off in dual format.
