Minnesota Falls in 6-1 Heartbreaker Against Memphis
2/17/2019 2:40:00 PM | Tennis
Minnesota's women's tennis team was downed by the Memphis Tigers 6-1 in their final match of their weekend-long southern dual. With this loss the Gophers move to a 5-3 record on the season with a two-match losing streak. This weekend's matches mark the first week out of the three weeks on the road for the Maroon and Gold with their next stop in Madison, Wisc.
"We had another tough match as we expected" head coach Catrina Thompson added. "There were opportunities we had today in doubles that we need to finish moving forward in the season. The doubles point is a huge momentum swing and we need to execute when we have openings. We are going to learn from this week and get back to work tomorrow."
Doubles
Across the board doubles proved to be tough for the Gophers. The No. 2 pairing of Tiffany Huber and Tina Kreinis kicked things off with a dominating 6-4 win. However, the Gophers dropped the No. 3 match 7-5. The 7-5 loss is the first loss the Gophers' duo of Bita Mancera and River Hart have seen thus far as their undefeated streak comes to an end at the hands of Laure Bente and Lina Hohnhold. After a back and forth battle leading to a tiebreak, the Maroon and Gold lost the doubles point as the No. 1 pairing of Cammy Frei and Caitlyn Merzbacher were downed 7-6.
Singles
In the fastest match of the day, Mancera continued her winning streak out of the No. 3 spot over Aleks Topalovic by a score of 6-4, 6-2. Memphis regained a 3-1 lead with two, quick wins out of the No. 2 and No. 6 spots as Huber and Hart were downed in straight sets. The remaining matches came down to the wire for the Gophers as all three went to third sets. Unfortunately, the Gophers fell in the final three positions for the Tigers to take the outright 6-1 team victory.
Up Next
The Gophers will get a much needed week of practice under their belts before hitting the road once again Feb. 23-24, 2019. The Utah Utes and Wisconsin Badgers await the Gophers in Madison for a weekend dual. Minnesota seeks revenge from last year's 4-3 loss against the Utes on Feb. 23 at noon followed by Minnesota's first Big Ten test against the Badgers on Feb. 24 at 1pm. Minnesota will return back to Baseline Tennis Center on Mar. 9, 2019 when they host a double header against Drake and Iowa State.
