Gophers Fall Despite Going The Distance With Utes

The Golden Gophers' women's tennis team was downed by the Utah Utes 4-3 in a neutral site dual in Madison, Wis. Looking to get back on the right track, the Gophers will face the Wisconsin Badgers on Sunday, Feb. 24 at 1pm CT in Madison.Â
"Another close battle but we need to keep learning and adjusting and move forward to tomorrow's match," head coach Catrina Thompson said. "We had a talk after last week about the bottom of the lineup stepping up and they gave us points today."
Doubles
Despite recent success out of the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles spots the Gophers' dropped the doubles point from the bottom half of the draws. The Utes were also up in the No. 1 spot 5-4 before going unfinished with the wins out of the No. 2 and No. 3 positions.
Singles
The bottom half of the singles lineup became the strong point for the Gophers' day. The Maroon and Gold saw a short lead with Cammy Frei and Bita Mancera winning their matches in straights out of the No. 4 and No. 3 singles spots respectively. The Utes would come back to take a 3-2 lead before River Hart tied the match up out of the No. 6 position. However, the Gophers' fell after a heartbreaking three-set match out of the No. 5 spot when Caitlyn Merzbacher was downed by Utah's Hekking.

"Tomorrow we need to do a better job of being more aggressive in doubles and staying disciplined with our game plans in singles," Thompson added. "We play a tough Wisconsin team tomorrow so we need to be sharp out of the gate and keep our energy and intensity on the road."

However, the Gophers are looking to spoil the Badgers' recent success at home. Wisconsin lost against the Utes 4-3 in their Friday dual which spoiled the Badgers' undefeated streak at home.
