Badgers Edge Out Gophers In Border Battle
2/24/2019 4:53:00 PM | Tennis
Ranked opponents proved to be too much for the Gophers as they fell 5-2 to the Wisconsin Badgers in the annual Border Battle competition. Despite taking an early lead in doubles, the Maroon and Gold only managed one singles point from the bottom half of the lineup solidifying the Badgers' win on their home court. With this loss, the Gophers move to a 5-5 overall record after suffering four straight losses on the road.
Doubles
The Maroon and Gold wasted no time in doubles draws when they jumped to an early lead after wins in the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. With an unfinished draw, the duo of Tiffany Huber and Tina Kreinis remain at 7-2 on the season. However, Cammy Frei and Caitlyn Merzbacher move to a 5-1 record with a 6-3 win in the top spot. The No. 3 pairing of Bita Mancera and River Hart clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win.
Singles
In the No. 2 spot, Huber went up against the nationally-ranked No. 65 Lexi Keberle. Huber fell in straight-sets 6-2, 6-0 to tie the match 1-1 for the Badgers. Mancera entered the match against Wisconsin with a perfect 8-0 dual record and had her winning streak stripped from her by the Badgers' Makarova in a 6-2, 6-2 heartbreaker to give the Badgers their first lead early into singles. Kreinis was similarly downed by a ranked opponent when No. 39 Castellano knocked off the junior in No. 1 singles 6-2, 6-4. Merzbacher had the only singles point of the day for the Gophers with a 6-4, 6-2 victory out of the No. 5 position. Frei and Hart both fell in gut wrenching matches with Frei being downed 7-6, 7-6 and Hart falling in the third set—her third, three-set match of the season.
