CLEARWATER, FLA.- The University of Minnesota closed out the St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational with a 4-0 shutout victory over California. The Gophers split the weekend 2-2 and improved to 4-3 overall.
"Every game was challenging," head coach Jamie Trachsel said. "This is a great tournament with a lot of the top teams in the entire country. I'm really proud of how our team came out and competed. It took everybody."Â
Amber Fiser and Rachel Lowary combined for a one-hit shutout game with California's only hit of the game coming at the very first at-bat.Â
Fiser tossed six scoreless innings, allowing only one hit with five strikeouts. At one point Fiser and the field retired 17 straight batters. The junior is 3-2 on the season with a 0.78 ERA and 41 strikeouts.Â
Lowary came into the game in the seventh to close it out while striking out two.
The Gophers plated two runs early in the bottom of the first. Ellee Jensen legged out an infield single and made her way to second on a wild pitch. With two outs on the board Hope Brandner launched a two-run homer to give Minnesota a 2-0 edge. Jensen led the team with six singles this weekend and finished .500 at the plate. Brandner has three home runs now this season.Â
The two teams looked to be locked in a pitcher's duel until Anne Miller came up with a clutch pinch-hit home run in the bottom of the fifth. The solo shot to left field was her first ever home run. Miller finished the weekend with three hits after entering the weekend without any in her career.Â
The Maroon and Gold added an insurance run in the sixth inning when MaKenna Partain crossed the plate on a California throwing error, making it 4-0. The run was a result of a Katelyn Kemmetmueller steal, the third time the Gophers have used aggressive base running to score with runners on the corners this season.Â
Minnesota heads to Tuscaloosa, Ala. Â next weekend for the Easton Bama Smash.
"We will enjoy the weekend and the things that we did well. We will continue to attack the things we need to work on this week and will prepare for another tough weekend ahead," Trachsel said. "We are excited. This team is hungry. They are excited about who we are and what we are doing together."Â
