Burns Homers Twice in 5-0 Victory

2/22/2019 12:59:00 PM | Softball

TUSCALOOSA, ALA. - Emma Burns launched the first two home runs of her career and the Gophers recorded seven extra base hits in a 5-0 victory over Louisiana Monroe this morning.

Sydney Smith pitched a complete game to grab the victory. She went seven innings with five strikeouts while only allowing three hits and no runs. Smith is now 1-1 on the season.

MaKenna Partain put the Gophers on the board in the second inning. She hit a shot to right field that took a Minnesota friendly bounce to score two runs on a triple.

After some quick frames, Burns stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the fourth and launched a solo shot with one out on the board.

"It was great," Burns said. "Honestly, I knew I had to change something up. I've been using the same bat all year. I went with Maddie Houlihan's bat today, shoutout to her. I knew my time was coming. I kept getting closer and closer to that big hit."

Five Gophers have hit the first home run of their careers now this season after the Burns home run.

Another bounce went the Gophers way in the fifth inning. Natalie DenHartog had a single take an angled hop past the shortstop and into the outfield to score Katelyn Kemmetmueller. The final run came in the sixth inning when Burns smacked a home run to the same exact spot in left center.

Burns, Partain, Kemmetmueller, Carlie Brandt, Hope Brandner and Maddie Houlihan all had at least one extra base hit in the game. Houlihan now has 40 doubles in her career.

The No. 24/RV Gophers will have a short break before taking on No. 6/6 Alabama this evening. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. and can be streamed on ESPN 3. There is impending weather so follow Twitter all day for updates.

"We are always going to be the underdog," Burns said. "We are always going to go out there and just fight as hard as we possibly can. That's what we are going to do tonight."
