Weight Throwers Lead Gophers on B1G Day One

Weight throw was Minnesota’s strongest event of day one as five Gophers scored points at the B1G Championships.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Tess Keyzers led the Golden Gopher track & field team with a runner-up finish in the weight throw as the University of Minnesota competed on day one of the 2019 Big Ten Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship hosted by Michigan on Friday.
The Minnesota women scored 23 points in four events on day one of the B1G Championship led by Keyzers' runner-up showing in her Big Ten debut. Meanwhile, the Gopher men combined for 11 points on day one of the meet, scoring points in two events. The women are fifth through six events scored while the men are eighth through five events scored in their respective team standings.
Weight throw was Minnesota's strongest event of day one as the women picked up nine points with two scorers and the men tallied eight points with three scorers.
Keyzers secured her runner-up finish for the women with a career-best throw of 21.27m (69-09.50) while Temi Ogunrinde earned one point with an eighth-place finish (19.82m, 65-00.50).
On the men's side, Jon Nerdal led the way with a lifetime best of 21.07m (69-01.50) to finish fifth. Nerdal remains eighth all-time at Minnesota in the event as he surpassed 21 meters for the first time in his career. Kieran McKeag added three points with a sixth-place finish at 20.71m (67-11.50) while Kaleb Siekmeier came in eighth at 19.80m (64-11.50) for an additional point.
Both the Gopher men and women also picked up points in the 3,000m on Friday night. Alec Basten added three points to the men's total with a sixth-place showing, clocking a time of 8:28.46 in his second 3,000m race of the season while the women secured nine points in the same event as Bethany Hasz (9:26.04) placed fourth and Megan Hasz (9:27.48) placed fifth. B. Hasz also advanced to Saturday's final in the mile with the fifth-best preliminary time at 4:44.30.
The women also picked up team points in long jump and the distance medley relay on Friday. Hannah Morris joined Keyzers in making a statement in her Big Ten debut, recording a collegiate-best mark of 6.05m (19-10.25) to secure a fifth-place finish in long jump. Her mark moved her into seventh in Gophers' history, and she earned four points for Minnesota in the team race.
Meanwhile, Minnesota's distance medley relay team of Lindsey Greenlund, Sophia Anderson, Paige Peschel, and Patty O'Brien finished eighth in 11:31.39 to claim one point.
Both the men and women saw several athletes advance past Friday's preliminary heats on the track to secure their positions in Saturday's finals.
For the men, Elliott Davis ran Minnesota's fastest 400m of the year at 47.51 seconds to advance to Saturday's final. Davis, who was the second fastest qualifier at the meet, clocked a personal record and jumped to 10th all-time at Minnesota in the 400m. Owen Hoeft also ran a lifetime best in the mile at 4:05.76 to punch his ticket to the Big Ten final, and Ben Psicihulis advanced in the 600m (1:19.09).
Rachel Schow (60m hurdles), Amira Young (60m dash), Bethany Hasz (mile), and Val Larson (600m) punch their tickets to event finals as well. Schow clocked a preliminary time of 8.53 seconds in the 60m hurdles to move on while Young ran 7.45 seconds to advance in the 60m dash. B. Hasz posted the third-best time in the mile prelims while Larson had the fastest preliminary time in the 600m at 1:30.76 to move onto the final.
Young also posted a career-best time of 24.27 seconds in the 200m to finish 10th and move into a tie for fifth among all-time Gophers.
Monique Felix also landed on Minnesota's all-time top-10 list in her Big Ten debut, posting a pentathlon score of 3,709 points to place ninth at the meet and move into 10th in Minnesota history.
Day two of the Big Ten Championship gets underway at 9 a.m. CT Saturday, beginning with the heptathlon 60m hurdles.
