Gophers Bump into Weather, Fall to No. 6 Alabama
2/23/2019 8:56:00 PM | Softball
The No. 24/RV University of Minnesota Gophers battled No. 6/6 Alabama and Mother Nature, but ultimately fell 7-2 in five innings this evening.Â
The game is official because it went five innings and was unable to continue due to weather tonight. Minnesota will play ULM at 9:30 a.m. CT tomorrow with Missouri State to follow.Â
The Gophers original first pitch time was delayed an hour and a half after the game before went into a rain delay. Once the game started it had a déjà vu feel similar to last night's 1-0 pitcher's duel. Neither team got much going offensively in the first three innings.Â
The Maroon and Gold got on the board first in the top of the fourth inning. Maddie Houlihan legged out an infield single to shortstop with Hope Brandner stepping to the plate next. Brandner delivered with a home run that smashed off a light pole in center to put the Gophers up 2-0 over the Crimson Tide. It was Brandner's fourth home run of the season and ended a 27.1 inning scoring drought against Alabama for the Gophers going back to 2017.Â
Fiser and the Gophers shut things down again in the bottom of the fourth but with the rain pouring down, the game escalated for the negative in the bottom of the fifth. With one out on the board, Alabama tied things up with a two-RBI single to left center.Â
A pair of home runs soon after quickly made it 7-2 in favor of Alabama before Rachel Lowary stepped into the circle and settled things back down with two strikeouts.Â
The game entered a delay before the top of the sixth inning ever started and was eventually called due to rain and impending storms. Follow Twitter for updates on tomorrow's schedule. As of now, Minnesota will play ULM at 9:30 a.m. CT tomorrow with Missouri State to follow.
