Gophers Win Two to Close Weekend

2/24/2019 2:38:00 PM | Softball

TUSCALOOSA, AL.- The No. 24/RV University of Minnesota closed out the Easton Bama Bash with wins against University of Louisiana Monroe (13-1 in five innings) and Missouri State (7-0). The Gophers finished 3-2 on the weekend and are now 7-5 on the season.

"We finished strong," head coach Jamie Trachsel said. "We had a bit of adversity this weekend with the weather and time changes. I'm proud of how we finished."

The Gophers scored 20 runs between the two games and did not record a single error.

Freshman Natalie DenHartog had a big day, smashing a grand slam against ULM and a double and her first career triple against Missouri State. Fellow freshman Emma Burns added her third home run of the weekend.

"Those two had a huge weekend, a growing up weekend," Trachsel said. "To come into an environment like this and perform the way they did says a lot about their ability, mindset and training."

Burns, Hope Brandner and Amber Fiser were all named to the All-Tournament team this weekend.

The Gophers head to Tucson, Ariz. next weekend for the Wildcat Invitational.

Game 1: Minnesota 13, ULM 1 (5)

The Gophers blew the game open right away with a nine run first inning. The 24 minute frame saw two home runs, one from Emma Burns and a grand slam from Natalie DenHartog. MaKenna Partain, Brandner and Maddie Houlihan each brought in one run to make it 9-0. It was Burns third home run of weekend, all against ULM. DenHartog has three home runs on the season after the grand slam.

ULM was able to get on the board in the bottom of the first, scoring one on a single to right field. They were scrappy with seven hits on the day but could not punch across another run.

Minnesota tacked on three more runs in the second. Partain grounded out in her at-bat, but it was enough to get Burns across the plate. Houlihan closed out the top of the second with a triple scoring Ali Lindner and Josey White to give the Gophers a 12-1 lead. Houlihan went 2-2 with three RBIs and a walk in the game.

In the top of the fourth, Lindner was walked, stole second and was brought home on a Partain single for the Gophers final run. Partain finished 3-4 at the plate with three RBIs.

Sydney Smith went three innings in the circle and nabbed the victory to improve to 2-1 on the season. She struck out two and only allowed one run. Hannah Bailey came into the game in the fourth inning and made quick work in her two frames of action.

Game 2: Minnesota 7, Missouri State 0

Minnesota and Missouri State each recorded only one hit in the first two innings but the Maroon and Gold took control in the third inning with a five run frame.

Allie Arneson plated the first run of the game. She came home as Ellee Jensen was caught in a rundown. With two outs on the board, Brandner sent a double to right field to score Houlian and Partain. DenHartog followed with an RBI-triple and later scored on a double steal as she avoided a tag at home. It was the fifth time this season that the Gophers have scored on a double steal with runners on the corners.

Doubles from Partain and Brandner kicked off the fifth for Minnesota. Brander's hit sent Partain home to extend the Gopher's lead to 6-0. Macy Gill entered the game as a pinch runner for Brandner and advanced to third on a wild pitch. A Katelyn Kemmetmueller single moved Gill home for the final run of the day.

Fiser and Rachel Lowary combined 15 strikeouts in the circle. Fiser went five innings, retiring the Bears in order in four out of the five innings. She tied her season-high with 10 strikeouts and only allowed one hit. Fiser improves to 4-4 on the season with a 1.79 ERA and 59 strikeouts.

Lowary took the circle in the sixth and quickly got to work striking out three batters. Lowary set a new career-high with five strikeouts after knocking out two more batters in the seventh.
