MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota men's golf team dropped both matches on the opening day of the Big Ten Match Play Championship Friday at the Hammock Beach Resort in Palm Coast, Fla. Junior Evan Long and Angus Flanagan each went 2-0 on the day to highlight the team's day.
Minnesota returns to the course Saturday to face 11th-seeded Michigan.
No. 10 Maryland 3.5, No. 7 Minnesota 2.5
Seeded seventh based on the final fall Golfstat rankings, the Gopher opened the day on the Conservatory Course against No. 10 Maryland, falling 3.5-2.5-0. Flanagan won his match, 5 and 4, while Long prevailed, 4 and 3.
Starting on the 10th hole, Flanagan took the early lead on the 11th hole when he bogeyed the whole, while Maryland's Tim Colanta recorded a double bogey. Flanagan pulled away with a stretch of four birdies in five holes between 15-18 and the first hole. Colanta got a stroke back on the second hole, but Flanagan immediately gained the five-hole advantage with a birdie on No. 3. He had five total birdies on the day.
Long needed just four holes to take a two-stroke lead over Chris Lane, using a pair on No. 15 and a birdie on No. 17 to go two up. After Lane cut Long's lead to one following hole one, Long used back-to-back pars to go up by three strokes. The match stayed that way until another par for Long on No. 7. Two holes later, Long's second birdie of the day ended the match on No. 10.
Junior Noah Rasinski's match was even through the first seven holes, but Maryland's Evan Santa won three straight holes to take the lead. A birdie for Rasinki on No. 5 cut the deficit to two, while a par on No. 7 got him within one. On the second-to-last hole of the day, he used a par to tie the match and come out with a draw.
Rounding out the match, senior Peter Jones lost his match, 3 and 2, while freshman Lincoln Johnson fell, 3 and 1, and junior Thomas Longbella dropped his matchup, 6 and 5.
No. 9 Indiana 3, No. 7 Minnesota 2 (1 tie)
While hole-by-hole results were not available for the Gophers' match with the Hoosiers, Flanagan and Long each won their matches by the same score, 3 and 1. Johnson, meanwhile, halved his match with Mitch Davis.
Longbella fell to Ethan Shepard, 4 and 2, while Rasinski lost to Jake Brown, 5 and 4. Sophomore Gus Minkin, making his spring debut, dropped his contest with Harry Reynolds, 4 and 2.
