MINNEAPOLIS – On The final day of competition, the Minnesota men's golf team split a pair of matchups at the Big Ten Match Play Championship Saturday at the Hammock Beach Resort in Palm Coast, Fla.

Junior Evan Long finished undefeated on the weekend by winning against Michigan and tying against Iowa. He went 3-0-1 in four matches in Florida.

The Golden Gophers are now off for just over a month, returning to action March 15-17 at the Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, Ga.

No. 7 Minnesota 3, No. 11 Michigan 3 (Gophers win on tiebreaker)
The seventh-seeded Gophers notched their first win of the spring season against No. 11 Michigan. Each team won three matches, but Minnesota claimed the victory thanks to a 16-13 edge in holes won. Junior Evan Long, sophomore Angus Flanagan and freshman Lincoln Johnson captured wins for the Gophers.

Johnson posted a dominant victory over Henry Spring, 8 and 7. Johnson was up two through three holes before rattling off victories on five straight holes, to go up seven through just nine holes. During the run, Johnson posted birdies on the 14th and 18th holes. A par on No. 2 for Johnson, couple with a bogey by Spring, gave the Minnesota freshman the victory.

Junior Evan Long improved to 3-0 on the weekend with a sizable win of his own, topping Ben Dunne, 6 and 5. Starting play on the 11th hole, Long took an early lead by winning the first two holes, including a birdie on No. 12. Still up two through four holes, Long won the next three holes, two of which came via birdies. Long and Dunne matched each other hole-for-hole until Dunne conceded on No. 5 to give Long the win.

Like Long, Flanagan also improved to 3-0 as he held off Nick Carlson, 2 and 1. Flanagan took control early, winning the first three holes of competition, Nos. 7-9. Carlson won the 12th hole, but Flanagan quickly got it back and added to his lead with pars on the 13th and 14th holes. The lead then grew to five-up for Flanagan with a victory on Hole 18. Carlson cut the deficit to three, but Flanagan was able to secure the victory.

Also in the match for Minnesota, freshman Will Grevlos was defeated in his spring debut, 3 and 2, while senior Peter Jones and junior Noah Rasinski each fell 5 and 4.

No. 3 Iowa 4.5, No. 7 Minnesota 1.5
Rasinski got the lone victory for Minnesota in its final matchup of the weekend, while Long tied in his match to earn half a point.

Rasinski defeated Gonzalo Leal, 3 and 2, to earn his first victory of the weekend. The first hole, No. 15, went to Rasinski as he recorded a par, while Leal bogeyed. Two holes later, the match was even, and it stayed that way until No. 2 when Leal pulled ahead. Rasinski fought back, though, to tie the match after the fourth hole and take the lead on No. 6 with a birdie. Another birdie for Rasinski on No. 8 put him up two, while the lead grew to three-up after No. 9. The two matched scores for the next four holes, giving Rasinski the win.

Long finished his weekend undefeated as he tied Aaron DeNucci. The match, which started on the 17th hole, saw DeNucci win the first two holes, but a birdie from Long on No. 1 got him within one. That was followed, though, by DeNucci winning the next three holes to lead by four after Hole 4. The lead was five for DeNucci after Hole 9, but that's when Long started his run. He won the 10th, 11th and 12th holes to find himself down just two with four to go. He couldn't gain any traction over the next two holes, but birdies on the 15th and 16th holes completed the comeback and forced a tie.

Also in the matchup for Minnesota, junior Thomas Longbella lost 5 and 4, while sophomore Angus Flanagan dropped his first matchup of the weekend, 3 and 1, and freshmen Will Grevlos (1 down) and Lincoln Johnson (4 and 3) also suffered defeats.
