MINNEAPOLIS – After a month off since its last competition, the Minnesota men's golf team is back in action this weekend at the 40th annual Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, Ga.

The 14-team tournament will be held at the Forest Heights Country Club, which is playing as a par-72 at 6,962 yards, with 18 holes each on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Friday's opening round will see the Gophers tee off at 8:15 a.m. CT, while Saturday's second round will commence at 8 a.m. CT and Sunday's final round will begin at 7:30 a.m. CT.

Minnesota is competing at the event for the second year in a row and eighth time overall. Its best performance came in 2006 when it tied for sixth and saw Josh Persons tie for 10th place. Last season, the Gophers tied for 11th.

The tournament has had several notable winners in the past, including Justin Thomas (2013), Bubba Watson (2000), Scott Verplank (1984), Bob Tway (1981), Hal Sutton (1980) and Curtis Strange (1974).

Competing for the Golden Gophers will be junior Noah Rasinski, sophomores Angus Flanagan and Evan Long, and freshmen Lincoln Johnson and Harry Plowman-Ollington. This will be the first time the Gophers have used this lineup this season, as Plowman-Ollington will be making his debut as part of the team's top squad after being part of the "B" team at the Gopher Invitational and competing as an individual at the Marquette Intercollegiate. In addition to those five, junior Thomas Longbella will also take part in the tournament as an individual.

The Gophers counting toward the team score this weekend represent four of the five top scorers from the fall. Flanagan led the squad with an average of 72.13, while Johnson (73.13) was third, Rasinski (73.93) fourth and Long (74.25) rounded out the top five. Longbella (72.83) was second the team during the fall, while Plowman-Ollington had an average of 81.00 in six rounds.

In addition to posting the team's top scoring average during the fall, Flanagan also led Minnesota in scores counted (93.3 percent), rounds under par (5) and tournaments with the team's top score (3). He also had the best finish in the fall by coming in sixth at the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate.
