MINNEAPOLIS – Sophomore Angus Flanagan is in third place and the Minnesota men's golf team is tied for ninth after Friday's opening round of the Schenkel Invitational at the Forest Heights Country Club in Statesboro, Ga.
Flanagan posted a 3-under-par 69 in Friday's opening round, his fifth round under 70 this season. Flanagan, who led the team with a scoring average of 72.13 in the fall, birdied the third hole but bogeys on the fifth and sixth holes left him at one-over through the first 11 holes of the day. He closed strong, however, with birdies on four of the last seven holes as he went back-to-back on holes 12-13 and 17-18.
Tied with Mississippi State's Ford Clegg, Flanagan is three strokes behind Mississippi State's Peng Pichaikool, who has the day-one lead thanks to a 6-under 66. College of Charleston's Logan Sowell is in second after a 4-under 68.
As a team, Minnesota is tied for ninth with Lipscomb by shooting a 7-over 295. College of Charleston and Mississippi State are tied for the round-one lead as both posted a 5-under, 283.
After Flanagan, junior Noah Rasinski and sophomore Evan Long are tied for 44th as each shot a 3-over 75.
Rasinski posted bogeys on the second and third holes, but steadied himself with six straight pars to round out the front nine. The back nine started promising with a birdie on No. 10, though a double bogey on No. 12 left him at 3-over. A birdie on No. 16 was immediately followed with another bogey at No. 17, leaving him at 3-over for the opening day.
Like Rasinski, an early stretch hurt Long on the front nine as he posted three consecutive bogeys on the second, third and fourth holes. He got back to 2-over thanks to a birdie on No. 7, while a bogey on No. 11 left him at 3-over as he finished the round with seven pars.
Freshman Lincoln Johnson was one stroke behind Long and Rasinski as he carded a 4-over 76 to tie for 44th. After going bogey-bogey to start the day, Johnson ended the front nine at 1-over thanks to a birdie on No. 7. He bogeyed the 10th hole, but cancelled it out with a second birdie on the 16th hole. However, a 3-over 7 on the 17th hole left him 3-over on the back nine and 4-over for the day.
Fellow freshman Harry Plowman-Ollington rounded out the Gophers' team contingent with a 5-over 77 to tie for 66th. He posted three birdies on the day, all of which came between the ninth and 16th holes.
Junior Thomas Longbella was also in action Friday as an individual. He is tied for 76th after a 6-over 78. He was even through the front nine as he posted two birdies and two bogeys, though the back nine saw him record six bogeys.
Round two of the Schenkel Invitational begins Saturday morning at 8 a.m. CT.
