MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota men's golf team slipped one spot from ninth to 10th after Saturday's second round of the Schenkel Invitational at the Forest Heights Country Club in Statesboro, Ga.
After posting a 7-over-par 295 in Friday's opening round, the Golden Gophers carded an 11-over 299 in round two for a two-round total of plus-18, 594. East Tennessee State has a three-shot lead over Mississippi State heading into Sunday's final round as it sits at 11-under with a 565.
Sophomore Evan Long had the top round for Minnesota on Saturday, recording a 1-over 73. He is now 4-over-par for the tournament, good for a tie for 35th. Long was 2-over through eight holes, but closed out the front nine with a birdie on No. 9. He bogeyed the 13th hole, but immediately followed with a birdie on No. 14. That was the same way he closed his day, with a bogey on No. 17 and a birdie on 18.
Fellow sophomore Angus Flanagan remains the Gophers' top competitor, tying for 12th place with an even-par 144. After going 3-under with a 69 Friday, he was 3-over with a 75 Saturday. Flanagan had a par on each hole on the front nine, but started the back nine with bogeys on 10 and 11. He remained 2-over heading to 15 but a double-bogey dropped him two shots. He managed to finish on a strong note with a birdie on No. 18.
Flanagan is one of six golfers in the tournament at even-par. They're all trailing Steven Fisk of host-Georgia Southern, who is 7-under with a 137.
Junior Noah Rasinski and freshman Lincoln Johnson are both tied for 52nd place with a 7-over 151.
Rasinski was 4-over with a 76 in the second round. His three birdies matched Long for the most by a Gopher in round two, but he also had three bogeys and a pair of double bogeys. Johnson was one stroke better on Saturday with a 3-over 75. He birdied the fifth and 18th holes, but had five bogeys through 12 holes of play.
Freshman Harry Plowman-Ollington was 6-over for the day with a 78 and finds himself tied for 73rd at 11-over for the tournament. After bogeys on seven of his first 15 holes, he ended his day with a birdie on No. 18. He was one of four Gophers to card a birdie on the final hole of the day.
Two shots behind Plowman-Ollington is junior Thomas Longbella, who is competing as an individual in the tournament. He was 7-over on the day and is 13-over through two rounds. Starting on the 10th hole, Longbella was just 1-over through his first nine holes, but he ended with seven bogeys after playing the front nine.
Minnesota will begin the third and final round on Sunday on the back nine. Plowman-Ollington will tee off first for the Gophers' squad at 8:42 a.m. CT, while Longbella begins his final round on No. 10 at 7:30 a.m. CT.
