Gophers Rewrite 5K All-Time Lists at Iowa State

Megan Hasz, Patty O'Brien, Obsa Ali, and Alec Basten clocked career-best times in the 5,000-meter run at the Iowa State Classic on Friday.
AMES, Iowa -- Megan Hasz broke Minnesota's program record in the 5,000-meter run while Patty O'Brien, Obsa Ali, and Alec Basten all clocked all-time top-10 times in the 5,000-meter run to the lead Golden Gopher track & field program on day one at the Iowa State Classic on Friday night.
M. Hasz placed third in the invite section of the 5,000-meter at the meet, recording a career-best time of 15:51.55 and improving on the previous women's program record of 15:59.23 held by Megan Duwell since 2010 by nearly eight seconds. Meanwhile, O'Brien also recorded a 5,000-meter career-best time, finishing third in the unseeded section in 16:31.45 to move into ninth in Minnesota history.
On the men's side, Ali and Basten led the way in 5,000 meter action with two of the best performances in school history. Ali, who ran the fourth fastest 3,000 meters in program history last month, ran the second fastest 5,000 meters ever at the University of Minnesota when he clocked a 13:38.41 to finish third in the invite competition. Ali already ranked second all-time for the Gophers in the event but moved closer to Hassan Mead's school record of 13:33.42. Basten, who finished second in his 5,000-meter competition on Friday, jumped in the top-10 at Minnesota with his time of 13:55.19 and now sits behind Ali in third all-time for the Gophers.
Bethany Hasz also recorded a Minnesota program record performance, improving on her own record mark in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:11.46 to place fourth in the invite section at the meet.
Along with the record-breaking performances, the Gopher women took home top honors in both the long jump and high jump on day one at the ISU Classic. Hannah Morris won long jump with a mark of 5.88m (19-03.50) while Ashley Ramacher used an indoor career-best mark of 1.76m (5-09.25) to earn the high jump crown and move into seventh in Gophers' history.
Competing unattached, Teddy Frid won the pole vault at 4.70 meters (15-05 ft.) and added a fourth-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles finals. Friday's pole vault win for Frid was his third victory in the event this season. John Uchytil finished fourth in the pole vault at 4.55 meters (14-11 ft.).
The Gophers also picked up a runner-up finish from Mason Roomes in the long jump (7.02 meters, 23-00.50 ft.) and a ninth-place finish in the 200 meters from Zach Nelson (21.96, season best). In the women's 60-meter hurdles, Rachel Schow clocked a season-best time of 8.50 seconds for third place while Sophia Anderson recorded an indoor career-best time of 25.14 seconds to place fifth in the 200-meter dash.
Members of the team also competed locally at the UST Showcase in St. Paul, Minn., on Friday evening. Josh Tracy (600m) and Carissa Dock (800m) won their respective events to lead the Maroon & Gold while Natalie Windels (600m) and Ayesha Champagnie (long jump) picked up wins while competing unattached.
Action continues on day two at the ISU Classic on Saturday with competition getting underway at 12 p.m. CT.
