McHugh Sets New School Record in the 100 Breaststroke

3/1/2019 9:56:00 PM | Men's Swimming & Diving

The University of Minnesota men's swimming and diving team watched as freshman Max McHugh improved upon his older brother's best time in the 100 Breaststroke to set a new school record and earn a silver medal on day three of the 2019 Big Ten Championships. The Maroon and Gold end the third day of competition in fifth place with 455.5 points and look to move up the ranks on the final day of the meet.

McHugh's silver-medal swim of 51.08 in the 100 Breaststroke was only beaten by the reigning 100 Breast NCAA Champion (Indiana's Ian Finnerty). His time now goes down as the best in program history, replacing Conner McHugh's time of 51.48 from the 2018 NCAA Championships.

The 200 Freestyle Relay team of Bowen Becker, Matthew Thomas, Tuomas Pokkinen and Eitan Yudashkin joined McHugh in bringing home B1G medals when they worked their way to a third place finish despite swimming in the first of two finals heats. The four swimmer combined to post an 'A' cut time of 1:17.24, automatically qualifying them to swim at the NCAA Championships later this month..

Pokkinen also swam a 46.84 in the consolation finals to finish in 12th place in the 100 Butterfly, while Thomas came in 14th after racing a 46.92. Becker (47.60) and Tom Donker (47.61) both competed in the 100 Fly C finals placing 21st and 22nd respectively.

Michael Messner was the lone Minnesota swimmer in the finals for the 400 IM, and he brought home a 19th place finish for the Gophers with his time of 3:51.82.

The Maroon and Gold had two swimmers competing in the 200 Free finals tonight. Nick Saulnier finished in 13th after posting a time of 1:35.72, and Tim Sates raced a 1:37.04 that was good for 22nd place.

Yudashkin competed in the consolation final of the 100 Breast, taking 14th place after touching the wall in 55.33.

Donker also swam in the consolation finals of the 100 Backstroke after winning a swim-off earlier this morning to qualify. He notched a finals time of 47.61 to take 15th for the Gophers.

At the conclusion of the 3-meter diving prelims, Jeremy Moser (346.05) and Alan Leblang (339.40) took 17th and 18th respectively. Nick Yang qualified for the consolation finals and ended the day with a final score of 396.25 earning him 11th place.
