Gophers Open Hurricane Invite with Field Event Wins

Day one of the two-day meet saw the Gophers compete in pole vault, hammer throw, discus, and high jump.
CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Mike Herauf won men's pole vault and Jon Nerdal won men's hammer throw as the duo took home the first two outdoor titles of the season for the Golden Gopher track & field program. The University of Minnesota kicked off the outdoor season on day one of the Hurricane Invitational hosted by the University of Miami at Cobb Stadium on Friday.
Day one of the two-day meet saw the Gophers compete in men's and women's pole vault, men's hammer throw, men's and women's discus, and men's and women's high jump. Women's hammer throw was originally scheduled for Friday but was delayed until Saturday morning.
Herauf picked up the first win of the outdoor campaign for the Maroon & Gold, earning the victory in the men's pole vault. The Gophers finished first and second in the event as Herauf cleared 4.95 meters (16-02.75) while John Uchytil was the runner-up at 4.75 meters (15-07.00).
Nerdal followed suit with a win in the men's hammer throw, setting a new personal record in the process at 63.38 meters (207-11). The performance topped Nerdal's previous career best by one inch while the redshirt sophomore remains eighth all-time at Minnesota in the discipline. Kaleb Siekmeier (53.65 meters, 176-00) and Connor Rousemiller (51.95 meters, 170-05) placed third and fourth, respectively.
The Gophers also earned a pair of top-five finishes in men's discus as Jonathan Tharaldsen and Siekmeier placed fourth and fifth, respectively, with season-opening marks of 52.60 meters (172-07) and 51.93 meters (170-04). Meanwhile, Ben Gucinski placed fourth in high jump, clearing 1.90 meters (6-02.75).
On the women's side, Kiley Sabin (discus) and Monique Felix (high jump) led the way with third-place finishes in their respective events.
Sabin threw 50.62 meters (166-01) for a season-opening mark and a third-place showing in discus while Erin Dunning recorded a career-best throw of 47.48 meters (155-09) for fourth place in discus.
In high jump, Felix cleared 1.65 meters (5-05.00) and won a jump-off for third place. Ashley Ramacher also cleared 1.65 meters and placed fifth.
Women's hammer throw kicks off day two at the Hurricane Invitational at 9 a.m. CT. Saturday's competition also has women's shot put, men's javelin, and both long jumps set to begin at 11 a.m. CT and the women's 4x100m relay is the first event on the track at 12 p.m. CT.
