Gophers Close Out Regular Season with First-Place Finish
3/15/2019 9:29:00 PM | Gymnastics
The No. 9 University of Minnesota women's gymnastics team closed out the regular season with a redemptive win over No. 7 Michigan, No. 19 Missouri and No. 67 Centenary College. The Gophers posted a final team score of 196.900, pushing past the Wolverines and the Tigers who tied for second-place with a 196.800 and Centenary who earned a 189.200 to finish fourth at tonight's meet.
The team improves to an overall record of 18-4 and a B1G record of 10-1 with this win over two of the four teams that outscored them earlier this season (Michigan at the Big Five meet on Feb. 22 and Missouri at the ASU quad meet on Jan. 4). Every team event score for Minnesota was once again a 49.000 or higher, with team beam's 49.275 leading the Maroon and Gold rotation.
Ona Loper took third place in the all-around competition after earning a 39.425 at tonight's quad meet. She posted a career-high beam score of 9.925 to push her past teammate Lexy Ramler who came in fourth in the all-around with her score of 39.350.
Freshman Tiarre Sales had a standout night as she scored a 9.900 or higher on all three of her events. Her matching 9.900s on vault and bars were the highest of any Minnesota gymnast on those events, and her incredible 9.950-earning beam routine won her the event title.
"Ti [Sales] was phenomenal," said head coach Jenny Hansen. "Career-high scores on every event. We had some new people step up this meet, so it's really exciting to know we haven't hit our potential yet. We can't wait to keep it going next week at Big Tens!"
Vault
Sales and Loper earned the highest vault scores for the Gophers as they received a pair of 9.900s. Sales' 9.900 was a career high for the Henderson, Nev. native. Ali Sonier added the next highest Minnesota score, a 9.850 while Paige Williams recorded a 9.800. Kristen Quaglia finished off the rotation with a 9.775 to give the Gophers a team vault score of 49.225.
Bars
Ramler and Sales posted matching 9.900s to lead the Gophers on the uneven bars. Ivy Lu recorded the next highest score for the team, a 9.875. Loper and Hannah Willmarth added a pair of 9.750s to the team total, bringing Minnesota to a team uneven bars score of 49.175.

Ramler added a score of 9.850 to the Maroon and Gold's total. Sonier recorded a 9.825, and Mary Korlin-Downs rounded out the rotation with her score of 9.725. The Gophers finished the meet with a team beam score of 49.275, their highest event score of the meet.

Up next for the Golden Gophers is the 2019 Big Ten Championships, hosted by Penn State on Mar. 23 in University Park, Pa. Minnesota will attempt to claim a first-place finish at B1G Championships for the sixth time in program history.
