3/18/2019 1:15:00 PM | Baseball
Sophomore pitcher Max Meyer earned the Big Ten Pitcher of the Week honor after setting the stage for a Gopher Baseball series victory over Long Beach State with his Friday night start against the Dirtbags.
Meyer stretched out the longest appearance of his career with 7.2 innings of one-hit ball. He allowed just three baserunners with a pair of walks in the game while striking out nine LBSU batters on the day. The Woodbury, Minnesota native also batted for himself in the game, going 3-for-3 with a double, 3 RBIs, a run scored, and reached base a fourth time on a hit-by-pitch. The utility man went 6-for-10 in the series with two doubles, four RBIs, and four runs scored.
Since moving to the starting rotation, Meyer has tossed 13.2 innings, allowing just two runs on five hits while striking out 17. He currently ranks no. 3 nationally with a 0.57 WHIP, no. 13 with 3.91 hits allowed per nine innings, and no. 26 with his 27-to-3 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Meyer last earned a Big Ten weekly on May 21, 2018, receiving the Freshman of the Week selection. The last Gopher to receive the conference Pitcher of the Week nod was Reggie Meyer ('18) that same week.
Minnesota (5-12) finishes its California stay with a Tuesday tilt against Pepperdine. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. CT.
Single-game tickets for all Siebert Field home games are now available. The Maroon & Gold return to campus on Friday, March 29 to begin a three-game series against Nebraska.
