Gophers Drop Pair of Games at NC State

3/2/2019 6:09:00 PM | Baseball

RALEIGH, N.C. – The University of Minnesota baseball team dropped both games of their doubleheader against NC State on Saturday. The Gophers fell 3-2 to start off the day and proceeded to lose 8-4 in the second game.

"I thought our players competed today," head coach John Anderson said. "They had opportunities in both games to take the lead and we couldn't get a big hit at the right time. But I'm seeing progress with our strikeouts coming down and pitching much better than we have so far this year."

The three runs given up in the first game is the lowest total allowed by the Gophers this season.

First baseman Cole McDevitt went 3-for-7 throughout the day with a solo homerun in each game and an RBI double in the second game. He now leads the team with three home runs and seven RBI on the season.

On the mound, Max Meyer shined with a career-high 4.2 innings pitched in the second game after coming in in relief of Sam Thoresen

The Gophers move to 2-7 on the season and will finish up the weekend series against NC State at 10 a.m. CT on Sunday. Next weekend Minnesota travels to the state of Washington for the Seattle Baseball Showcase.

Game 1: Minnesota 2, NC State 3
Despite getting nine hits compared to the home team's seven, the Gophers dropped the first game of the series, and the day, by a score of 3-2.

The Wolfpack got on board first with a three-run fourth inning that featured back-to-back doubles and a single to drive in the third and final run.

The Gophers rally began in the top off the sixth. After Jordan Zozicky was able to get on base to lead-off the inning, Jack Wassel clubbed a deep drive to right-center to get Minnesota's first run of the weekend on the board.

Wassel was thrown out at third trying to stretch his hit into a triple, but Andrew Wilhite and Ben Mezzenga picked up where he left off with two more singles.

The next inning, first baseman Cole McDevitt blasted a solo homerun over the leftfield fence for his first home run of the season.

Ultimately, the Gophers were set down in order in the ninth inning to finish the first game of the doubleheader.

With his single in the eighth inning, Eli Wilson extended his hitting streak to nine dating back to last season and has a hit in every game this season.

Preseason All-American Patrick Fredrickson threw 4.1 innings with four strikeouts while allowing five hits and three earned runs. He was relieved by Nick Lackney who gave up only two hits in 2.2 innings of work.

Game 2: Minnesota 4, NC State 8
Despite scoring the first run of the second game, the Gophers were once again outscored by the Wolfpack and fell 8-2.

After Ben Mazzenga led off the game with a walk, the Gophers got on the board first with a double down the line from Cole McDevitt to drive in the first run of the game.

The Wolfpack roared back with a monster first inning that chased Gophers start Sam Thoresen after registering only one out. Thoresen falls to 0-4 on the season.

The home team scored two runs on a single up the middle before Vojtech Mensik launched a grand slam to left field to blow the game open.

McDevitt added another run for the Gophers with a solo shot in the fourth inning, but the Wolfpack answered with a home run themselves in the bottom half of the inning.

Max Meyer came on in relief of Thoresen to throw 4.2 innings, a new career high. In his time on the mound the Woodbury, Minnesota, native allowed only two hits while registering four strikeouts on 74 pitches.

Stevenson finished off the final three innings allowing two hits and one unearned run while striking out four batters.

Zach Raabe nearly spurred a Gophers rally with a two-run double with two outs in the ninth inning, but Minnesota was unable to surge back.
