Gophers Post Second-Highest Overall Team Score in Program History

The No. 11 University of Minnesota women's gymnastics team finished the 2019 home schedule on a high note as the team posted an overall score of 197.500, the second-highest overall team score in program history. The Golden Gophers defeated No. 38 Pittsburgh, 197.500 to 193.400, tonight in Maturi Pavilion on senior night.  

Minnesota led from the first rotation having posted a team score of 49.300 on vault and following with a 49.475 on the uneven bars, a 49.325 on the balance beam and finishing the meet with a 49.400 on floor. Pitt posted scores of 48.825 on the bars, 48.825 on the vault, 48.600 on the floor and 48.900 on the beam.

"We are really getting better every week," head coach Jenny Hansen said. "We put all four events together tonight, and we haven't done that this year. I think that's why we saw such a big jump in the score for us. They were just on and I know they wanted to send the seniors out in style."

Lexy Ramler won the all-around title with a score of 39.650. The St. Michael, Minn. native earned a career-high beam score of 9.975 to help her secure the crown. Ona Loper finished second in the all-around competition after recording a career-best all-around score of 39.450, led by her season-high 9.900 on floor.

Vault

Minnesota started the night on vault with the Gophers posting a season-high team vault score of 49.300. Minnesota had five individuals score a 9.8 or higher. Williams led the Gophers when she posted a career-best 9.900. Loper added a score of 9.875, while Tiarre Sales and Ramler posted scores of 9.850. Ali Sonier rounded out the top five at 9.825.

Bars

The Gophers recorded the second-best team uneven bars score in school history as the gymnasts combined for a team score of 49.475 in front of tonight's crowd. Ramler tied a career and season best with a 9.950 to pave the way. Lu followed with a 9.925, while Sales added a career-best 9.900. Quaglia, Willmarth and Loper added scores of 9.850s, Quaglia's being a new career-high for the Chanhassen, Minn. nativet.

Beam

The Gophers posted a team beam score of 49.325, which was the second-highest this season and fifth in school history. Ramler achieved a new career-best with a 9.975 and Sales joined her teammate in posting a career-best score (9.900). Loper and Mary Korlin-Downs both scored a 9.825, while Lu posted a 9.8 to round out the top five Gopher scores.

Floor

Minnesota's 49.400 on floor exercise solidified the second-best overall team score in school history. Kaitlyn Higgins kicked off the Gopher rotation with a career-high mark of 9.850. Williams added the Gophers' best score of the event. Anchoring the rotation, she posted a 9.925.  Loper's season-high score of 9.900, Ramler's score of 9.875 and Sonier's 9.850 finished off the rotation for the Maroon and Gold.

Next Up

Minnesota is on the road next weekend as the team travels to Birmingham, Ala. to compete against Georgia, Arkansas and Michigan state in a quad meet hosted by Elevate The Stage. The event is scheduled to start on Friday, Mar. 8 at 6:30 p.m. CT and will be streamed on FloGymnastics.
