Bacon Named NCAA Champion, Defends One-meter Title

3/21/2019 8:14:00 PM | Women's Swimming & Diving

The University of Minnesota women's swimming and diving team has completed the first full day of competition at the 2019 NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas. The Golden Gophers saw three student-athletes qualify for 'A' finals in individual events, including Sarah Bacon who was crowned the 2019 One-meter Diving NCAA Champion, in addition to the 7th place-finishing 400 Medley Relay. Minnesota is in 8th place overall with 76 points after seven events and with 14 more to follow in the next two days.

The first night of NCAA competition on Wednesday featured the 800 Freestyle Relay as the lone event of the session. The team of Chantal Nack, Mackenzie Padington, Tevyn Waddell and Zoe Avestruz touched the wall in 7:00.34 to take 16th place overall. The group of Gophers earned Honorable Mention All-American Accolades for their race as well as brought home the first points of the meet for Minnesota.

The team got off to a strong start on Thursday as both Gophers who competed in the 500 Freestyle swam record-setting swims. In the prelims, Mackenzie Padington tied Kiera Janzen's school record of 4:35.70 from back in 2013 only for Chantal Nack to break it in the following heat with her time of 4:35.47. The duo moved on to the 'A' finals, seeded 3rd (Nack) and 5th (Padington) where Padington touched the wall in 4:35.21 to earn a bronze medal and officially claim the school record. Nack's finals time of 4:35.88 saw her finish in fifth place in the event. Both swimmers claimed First Team All-American honors for their performance in the 500 Free.

Sarah Bacon returned to the diving well for the one-meter competition, hoping to defend her 2018 NCAA Title in the event. She finished the preliminary session with the best six-dive score (346.05) of all the competitors, earning her the top seed heading into the evening finals. Kristen Hayden finished the preliminary dives with a score of 277.90, which was good for 22nd.

In the finals, Bacon posted a score of 363.20 to become the 2019 NCAA One-meter Diving Champion and successfully defend her 2018 national title. Her score also set a new NCAA Record, outscoring the previous mark of 361.55 set by Stanford's Cassidy Krug in 2007.

The 400 Medley Relay team qualified for the evening 'A' finals after Emily Cook, Lindsey Kozelsky, Waddell and Avestruz swam a prelim time of 3:29.93 to earn themselves the 7th seed. The group raced a 3:20.94 in the evening finals, earning All-American honors and finishing in 7th place.

The Gophers return to the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center tomorrow for another full day of competition. Minnesota will have swimmers representing the U in the 100 Butterfly (Waddell), 200 Freestyle (Nack and Padington), 100 Breaststroke (Kozelsky and Rachel Munson), 100 Backstroke (Waddell), Three-meter Diving (Bacon and Hayden) and the 200 Medley Relay (Cook, Kozelsky, Waddell and Avestruz). Prelims begin at 9:00 a.m. CT and finals follow at 5:00 p.m. CT.
