Gophers Stand in Seventh After Day Two at NCAA Championships

The sun has set on the University of Minnesota women's swimming and diving team's third day competing at the 2019 NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas. The Golden Gophers had two student-athletes qualify for 'A' finals in individual events, three individuals qualify for consolation finals, and the 200 Medley Relay earn Honorable Mention All-American honors.. Minnesota is in 7th place overall with 131 points after 14 events and with seven more to follow on the last day of competition tomorrow.

Sarah Bacon returned to the diving well for the three-meter competition after becoming the one-meter NCAA Champion for the second year in a row during last night's finals. She earned a spot in the 'A' finals with her prelim score of 348.30. She competed alongside teammate Kristen Hayden who qualified for the consolations finals where she finished 11th with a six-dive score of 340.20. In the finals, Bacon posted a score of 373.65 to take fifth place in the event and earn All-American honors on the three-meter board.

Chantal Nack qualified for the consolation finals of the 200 Free where she finished in 14th place after touching the wall in 1:44.18. Nack earned Honorable Mention All-American honors for this swim. Rachel Munson also snagged Honorable Mention All-American honors thanks to her performance in the 100 Breaststroke. She swam a PR time of 59.17 to move on to the consolation final seeded 9th. She ended the night in 14th after swimming a 59.40 in the finals.

The 200 Medley Relay team qualified for the evening consolation finals after Emily Cook, Lindsey Kozelsky, Waddell and Avestruz swam a prelim time of 1:36.65. The group combined to race the exact same time of 1:36.65 in the finals, placing 11th and earning Honorable Mention All-American accolades.

Kozelsky also earned All-American honors in the 100 Breaststroke when she swam her way to a fourth-place finish with her 'A' finals time of 58.09. The breaststroker brings the Gophers to a total of two All-American nods on the day and six so far into the meet. 

The Gophers return to the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center tomorrow for another full day of competition. Minnesota will have swimmers representing the U in the 200 Backstroke (Nack and Waddell), 200 Breaststroke (Kozelsky and Munson), 1650 Freestyle (Mackenzie Padinton) and Platform Diving (Hayden). Prelims begin at 9:00 a.m. CT and finals follow at 5:00 p.m. CT.
