MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota men's golf team sits in sixth place following Friday's opening round of the 50th annual Furman Intercollegiate in Greenville, S.C.

Four of Minnesota's five golfers were within two strokes of even-par, putting them at 6-over after shooting a collective 290 in the opening round at Furman University Golf Course. The Golden Gophers are nine strokes behind first-place Virginia Tech, which shot a 3-under 281.

Sophomore Angus Flanagan led the way for Minnesota with an even-par 71 to tie for 13th place. He got his round started in grand fashion with an eagle on the par-5 second hole, his third bogey in the last two rounds. After a bogey on No. 6, he birdied No. 8 to finish the front nine 2-under. A pair of bogeys and birdies through the first six holes on the back nine kept him at 2-under, but a double bogey on his final hole dropped him back to even par.

Junior Thomas Longbella, sophomore Evan Long and freshman Lincoln Johnson are all tied for 26th at 2-over par as they each fired a 73.

Longbella had one birdie on the day, which came on the second hole, to go with three bogeys. He was even on the front nine and 2-over on the back. Long was the opposite of Longbella, going 2-over on the front nine but finishing at even-par on the back. Long had birdies on the second and 16th holes to go along with four bogeys. Johnson split the difference and was 1-over on both the front and back nines. He also had a pair of birdies that came on holes two and 13 along with four bogeys.

Junior Noah Rasinski competed as an individual and joined the Gophers trio by also finishing in a tie for 26th at 2-over with a 73. He had a team-high four birdies, three of which came on the front nine as he made the turn at even-par.

Also competing as an individual was redshirt sophomore Gus Minkin. Making his spring debut, he shot a 9-over 80, going 3-over on the front nine and 6-over on the back.

Minnesota is back in action at the Furman Intercollegiate with the second round on Saturday. The Gophers' squad tees off on the back nine at 11:10 a.m. CT., while Minkin is set to begin at 12:10 p.m. and Rasinski at 12:50 p.m. Live stats are available on GolfStat.com.
