Minnesota Moves Up to Fifth at Furman Intercollegiate

MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota men's golf team climbed one spot into fifth place through two rounds of play at the 50th annual Furman Intercollegiate in Greenville, S.C.
As a team, Minnesota posted a 2-over 286 Saturday at Furman University Golf Course, its lowest round of the spring. The Golden Gophers are three strokes behind Virginia Tech for fourth place, nine shots back of Davidson and Furman, who are tied for second, and 15 behind first-place Coastal Carolina.
Sophomore Angus Flanagan fired an even-par 71 for the second straight day and is tied for eighth place with a two-round total of 142. He was even on both the back and front nine. His back nine saw him post a pair of birdies to go with two bogeys. On the front, he bogeyed No. 1 to move to 1-over par, but he immediately birdied the second hole to get back to even and then posted pars the rest of the way to forge a six-way tie for eighth.
Freshmen Lincoln Johnson and Harry Plowman-Ollington find themselves tied for 24th as both are three strokes over par.
Plowman-Ollington, who was tied for 52nd after the first round, fired a career-best round of 1-under 70. Starting on the 10th hole, Plowman-Ollington was 1-over on the back nine, including a birdie on No. 11. He was even better on the front nine, going low for a 2-under 33 that featured birdies on the second and ninth holes. His three birdies on the day were tied for the most by a Gopher.
Johnson was 1-over for the day as he shot a 72. He birdied the 15th hole but moved back to even-par with a bogey on No. 16. On the front nine he posted bogeys on the first and sixth holes, but was able to birdie the penultimate hole, No. 8, to move to 1-over.
Sophomore Evan Long is one shot back of Johnson and Plowman-Ollington as he sits in a tie for 34th at 4-over for the tournament following a 2-over 73 Saturday. He matched Plowman-Ollington with three birdies on the day. He was 3-over after his first nine holes, but birdies on holes 1 and 4 got him back to 1-over. He bogeyed No. 7 but still finish the front nine at 1-under.
Junior Thomas Longbella is tied for 60th at 8-over. He had a birdie on his second hole of the day, but was 6-over on the front nine and 6-over on the day.
Competing as individuals were junior Noah Rasinski and redshirt sophomore Gus Minkin.
Rasinski is tied for 45th at 6-over following a 4-over 75 Saturday. He tied Long and Plowman-Ollington with three birdies on the day. Rasinski was even on the back nine, but was 4-over on the front nine despite a pair of birdies. Minkin is 15-over for the tournament after a 6-over 77.
