MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota men's golf team matched its best finish of the season as it finished fifth at the 50th annual Furman Intercollegiate Sunday in Greenville, S.C.
The Golden Gophers shot an even-par 284, tying for the second best score of any team in the final round. It also marked the fifth time in seven tournaments this season that the Gophers' best round came on the final day of competition. Minnesota finished at 8-over-par for the tournament at 860.
It's the third time this season that the Gophers have finished in fifth place. They opened the season by tying for fifth at their own Gopher Invitational, then also tied for fifth at the Marquette Intercollegiate two tournaments later.
Coastal Carolina took home the team title with a 7-under 845.
Minnesota had a three-way tie atop its team standings as sophomores Angus Flanagan and Evan Long and freshman Lincoln Johnson all tied for 11th at 2-over par with a 215.
For Flanagan, it was his fifth time having the best score on the team at a tournament, while Johnson and Long each matched a personal best as both had previously tied for 11th at the Gopher Invitational.
Flanagan had a team-best five birdies in the final round, including back-to-back birdies on holes 10 and 11, as he finished 2-over with a 73. Johnson was 1-under for the day as four birdies helped give him a 70.
Long had a career day Sunday as he posted a career best round of 2-under 69, bettering his previous best 18-hole score of 70 set in the final round at this year's Maui Jim Intercollegiate. Starting on the sixth hole with Sunday's shotgun start, Long was 1-over through 13 holes following back-to-back bogeys on holes 16 and 17. He ended strongly though with birdies on three of the final five holes.
Furman's Keller Harper won the individual competition as he carded a three-round total of 205, good for 8-under par.
Freshman Harry Plowman-Ollington had the best finish of his career and his best 54-hole score as he tied for 22nd at 4-over with a 217. It smashed his previous best placement of a tie for 63rd and three-round total of 227 at last week's Schenkel Invitational. Sunday, he was 1-over with a 72 thanks in part to an eagle on No. 15 and consecutive birdies on the second and third holes.
Junior Thomas Longbella rounded out the Gophers' squad in a tie for 97th, while individual competitors Noah Rasinski and Gus Minkin finished tied for 88th and 102nd, respectively.
Minnesota is now off for the next two weeks before returning to action April 13-14 at the Rutherford Intercollegiate in State College, Pa.
