MINNEAPOLIS ā With just two tournaments left in the regular season, the Minnesota men's golf team looks to continue its preparation for the Big Ten Championships at the end of April. This weekend, the Golden Gophers head to State College, Pa., for the 43rd annual Rutherford Intercollegiate.
Hosted by Penn State, the tournament is taking place at the Penn State Blue Course, which is playing at 7,219 yards and is playing as a par-71. Competition will begin at 6:30 a.m. CT on Saturday with 36 holes, while Sunday will feature a final round of 18 holes starting at 7 a.m. CT. Unfortunately, live scoring will not be available for the tournament.
Minnesota is one of 13 teams set to compete this weekend and is one of three Big Ten teams, along with Penn State and Rutgers. As a whole, the Golden Gophers have not faced any of the other 12 teams in a tournament so far this season.
This will be Minnesota's first time competing at the Rutherford Intercollegiate since 2014 when it took home the team title and Jose Mendez was the individual champion with a then-tournament record 207.
Representing Minnesota at the event this year will be junior Noah Rasinski, sophomores Evan Long and Gus Minkin, and freshmen Will Grevlos, Lincoln Johnson and Harry Plowman-Ollington.
Johnson, Long, Plowman-Ollington and Rasinski have all played in both tournaments so far this spring and rank second through fifth, respectively, in spring scoring for the Gophers.
Minkin made his spring debut as an individual at Minnesota's last tournament, while Grevlos will be competing for the first time in the spring this weekend after ranking fifth on the squad in the fall with a 74.33 scoring average.
It's been about three weeks since the Gophers last competed at the Furman Intercollegiate, March 22-24, where they matched their best finish of the season by coming in fifth. Minnesota had a three-way tie atop its team standings as sophomore Angus Flanagan, Long and Johnson all tied for 11th at 2-over par with a 215.
