The University of Minnesota women's tennis team fell 7-0 in a heartbreaker to No. 24 Michigan to wrap up their weekend of competition. The Gophers move to 10-7, 2-2 on the season while the Wolverines simultaneously snapped the Maroon and Gold's five-match win streak.
Doubles
In an absolute spectacle, the Wolverines stole the doubles point from the Gophers to take the 1-0 lead. The nationally-ranked doubles tandem of Kate Fahey and Brienne Minor pushed Michigan out to an early lead with a 6-0 win over Cammy Frei and Caitlyn Merzbacher. However, the Gophers gritted out to force two tiebreaks out of the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. The No. 2 position clinched the doubles win for the Wolverines with a 7-6 (7-5) score while the No. 3 spot was left unfinished 6-6 (6-6).
Singles
With four, nationally-ranked singles competitors on their roster, Michigan dominated singles draws to give them the outright sweep. After winning her last five, Bita Mancera was finally downed by No. 36 Brienne Minor 6-4, 7-6(2) to push her season record to 13-3. In another close dual, Merzbacher was edged out by Michigan's Jones 4-6, 6-3, 7-10 to conclude play in Ann Arbor.
Up Next
The Gophers will get another taste of nationally-seeded competition as they travel to Penn State on April 5 followed by a match up with Big Ten leader and No. 14 Ohio State on April 7. The matches against the Nittany Lions and Buckeyes mark the end of the Gophers road season as they will wrap up regular season play with five consecutive home matches.
