Nine Minnesota swimmers and divers are set to compete at this week's men's NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. Five Gophers will contest in individual events and three relays will look to bring in points for the Maroon and Gold. Minnesota finished fifteenth at the 2018 NCAA Championships, the team's best finish since 2010-11.
The meet will take place from Wednesday, March 27-Saturday, March 30, with
Wednesday's 6 p.m. CT finals of the 800 freestyle relay starting the meet. The next three days will begin with prelims at 10 a.m. CT and finals at 6 p.m. CT with ESPN3 streaming the final session each night. The Gophers will begin their Championships on Thursday, when Minnesota will have representatives competing in the 50 Free, the 200 Free Relay, the 400 Medley Relay and in one-meter diving.
Bowen Becker returns to his fourth and final NCAA Championships where he will compete as an individual in the 50 and 100 Freestyle. He is seeded in the top-five in both events and looks to improve upon his third (50 Free) and fourteenth (100 Free) place finishes from the 2018 NCAA Championships. The senior will also swim on the 200 Freestyle Relay team, which is seeded seventeenth.
Freshman Max McHugh is making his NCAA Championships debut as he is slated to compete as an individual in the 100 and 200 Breaststroke. He is seeded third and sixth in the respective events. McHugh will also compete on the 200 and 400 Medley Relay teams, for which he will swim the breaststroke leg.
Senior Nick Yang will compete in all three diving events at the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive season. In 2018 he finished within the top 20 for all three events, most-notably taking fifth in the platform competition with a score of 423.55 and earning All-American honors.
Alan Leblang joins his fellow senior diver in the one-meter, three-meter and platform diving competitions at this year's NCAA Championships. He is making his third appearance at the NCAA Championships and hopes to best last year's finishes of 46th on three-meter and 20th on platform.
Jeremy Moser rounds out the Minnesota divers who secured spots at the 2019 NCAA Championships. Moser qualified for his first NCAA Championships after winning the platform competition with a score of 706.25 at the Zone D Diving Meet earlier this month. His twelfth-place finish in the three-meter competition automatically qualified him to compete in that event as well by way of his platform berth.
The Gophers will send three relays to the NCAA Championships, two of which qualified after swimming 'A' cut times at the Big Ten Championships at the end of February. Matt Thomas, Tom Donker, Eitan Yudashkin and Tuomas Pokkinen will compete alongside the previously mentioned Gophers as they look to score points for Minnesota via the relays.
The eight fastest times in each preliminary race, including relays, will advance to the finals in the evening session and automatically earn NCAA All-America honors (the only exception being the 1,650-yard freestyle, which is a timed final). The next eight fastest times (the ninth to sixteenth-fastest) will swim in the evening's 'B' final and earn NCAA All-America honorable mention honors. All top-16 finishers will earn points for their Universities.
