Relay Sets School Record at NCAA Championships

The University of Minnesota men's swim and dive team has closed out their first full day of competition at the 2019 NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas with a top-five individual finish and a new school record in the 400 Medley Relay. The Golden Gophers sit in 18th place overall with a total of 29 points.
The 400 Medley Relay team qualified for the consolation final after swimming a school record time of 3:05.24 in the morning prelims, improving upon their own record that they set back at the 2019 B1G Championships. The record-setting team of Tom Donker, Max McHugh, Tuomas Pokkinen and Bowen Becker went on to break their record for the second time today with their finals time of 3:04.70. All four swimmers earned Honorable Mention All-America honors after finishing 10th in the country.
Becker also earned a spot in the 'A' finals of the 50 Freestyle after touching the wall in 18.88 during the morning preliminaries. He was seeded fourth heading into the race for the title and ended up maintaining that position as he finished fourth in the nation with his time of 18.84 to receive All-America honors.
In today's one-meter diving event, Alan Leblang and Nick Yang took 33rd and 37th place with their respective scores of 272.20 and 254.15. Both will be back in the diving well for tomorrow's three-meter competition.
The 200 Freestyle Relay team of Becker, Matt Thomas, Pokkinen and Eitan Yudashkin combined to race a 1:18.19 in prelims to finish 20th in the nation in the event.
The Gophers return to the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center tomorrow for another full day of competition. Minnesota will have swimmers representing the U in the 100 Breaststroke (McHugh), Three-meter Diving (Yang, Leblang and Jeremy Moser) and the 200 Medley Relay (Donker, McHugh, Pokkinen and Becker). Prelims begin at 10:00 a.m. CT and finals follow at 6:00 p.m. CT.
