McHugh Earns Bronze at NCAA Championships

The University of Minnesota men's swim and dive team has completed the second full day of competition at the 2019 NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas and is currently in 20th place overall with 45 points after 14 events and with seven more to follow on the last day of competition tomorrow.
Max McHugh took the 100 Breaststroke prelims by storm this morning, swimming a school-record 50.30 and putting his performance down in the record books as the 4th-fastest 100 Breast swim in NCAA history. He improved upon his own school record (previously 51.08) that he set at the B1G Championships earlier this month. In the event finals he raced a 50.52 to bring home the first medal for the Minnesota men so far this week as he took third place and earned All-America honors for his performance.
At the end of the prelims for the three-meter diving event, Nick Yang finished in 21st place with a six-dive score of 333.75, Alan Leblang took 24th with his score of 326.35 and Jeremy Moser came in 27th after notching a six-dive score of 319.45. All three divers will turn to the tower during the final day of the meet as they take on the platform competition.
The 200 Medley Relay team of Matt Thomas, McHugh, Tuomas Pokkinen and Bowen Becker posted a time of 1:24.85 to finish 17th overall in the event and wrap up the relay competition for the Gophers at this year's meet.
The Gophers return to the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center tomorrow for another full day of competition. Minnesota will have swimmers representing the U in the 200 Breaststroke (McHugh), 100 Freestyle (Becker) and Platform Diving (Leblang, Moser and Yang). Prelims begin at 10:00 a.m. CT and finals follow at 6:00 p.m. CT.
