Becker and McHugh Bring Home Silver at NCAA Meet

At the conclusion of four days of competition and 21 events, the University of Minnesota men's swimming and diving team has finished in 19th place with 84 points at the 2019 NCAA Championships. The Gophers set four new school records, finished in the top-five of an event four times over the course of the meet and saw five student-athletes earn All-America honors.
Bowen Becker was the first Gopher to break a school record during today's competition. The senior swam a 41.44 in the 100 Freestyle prelims, beating his own record, qualifying for the 'A' finals and earning a second seed for the title race. The Las Vegas, Nev. native is the first Gophers swimmer to make the 'A' final in both the 50 and 100 Freestyle in the same year at NCAA Championships since Steve Jackman achieved the feat back in 1963.
In the finals he touched the wall in 40.83 to finish second in the country in the event and earn All-America honors. The senior's time not only reset the school record but is also now the fourth-fastest 100 Freestyle time in NCAA history.
Max McHugh put his name in the Minnesota history books for the second time this week as he raced a 1:51.36 in the 200 Breaststroke prelims to break his older brother's school record. He dropped a full second off his entry time for the race and moved on to the 'A' final seeded third. In the finals he improved upon his own record and brought the Gophers their second silver-medal finish of the night with his time of 1:49.41. The freshman received another set of All-America accolades for tonight's swim.
Nick Yang finished 12th overall in today's Platform Diving event with his six-dive score of 321.25 from the consolation finals. The senior earned Honorable Mention All-America honors for his performance. Alan Leblang's prelim score of 291.70 was good for 27th place and Jeremy Moser's score of 283.60 earned him a 30th place finish in the event.
