BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of Minnesota track & field program picked up a trio of Second Team All-America honors on Friday as the Maroon & Gold opened competition at the 2019 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Track & Field Championships, held at the Birmingham Crossplex.
Kiley Sabin, Jonathan Tharaldsen and Obsa Ali represented the Gophers on Friday with all three earning All-America honors. Kieran McKeag will close out the event on Saturday in the men's weight throw.
Sabin placed 14th and earned Second Team All-America honors in the women's shot put on Friday evening. Her best throw came on her first attempt with a mark of 15.84 meters (51-11.75 ft.); she fouled her second throw and threw 15.55 meters (51-00.25 ft.) on her third and final attempt. Sabin wraps up her indoor career with the Gophers as a three-time qualifier for the NCAA Indoor Championships and a three-time All-American indoors. She owns Minnesota's indoor shot put record with her career-best mark of 17.47m (57-03.75), which she set at the Parents Day Invite earlier this season. Sabin's best finish at the NCAA indoor meet came in 2018 when she finished fifth in shot put.
Meanwhile, Tharaldsen made his debut at the national championships with a 14th-place finish in the men's shot put. After fouling on his first attempt of the day, the redshirt junior hit 17.77 meters (58-03.75 ft.) on his second attempt and then closed out the competition with a mark of 18.66 meters (61-02.75 ft.) on his third and final throw of the day. Tharaldsen closes out the indoor campaign having jumped to third all-time at Minnesota in the men's shot put. His personal record of 19.50 meters (63-11.75 ft.) came in a win at the Jack Johnson Classic – one of two wins for the redshirt junior in the men's shot put this year.
Ali added a 15th-place finish in the men's 5,000 meters to close out the opening night of competition for the Maroon & Gold. The redshirt senior made his first appearance at the indoor national championships, picking up his third overall All-America accolade by running 14:18.36. Ali closed out his indoor career having run the second fastest 5,000 meters in program history at 13:38.41 and the fourth fastest 3,000 meters at 7:54.92 earlier this year. He previously set the school record in the 3,000 meter steeplechase to win the national championship last season and also ran the fastest 10,000 meters in Gophers cross country history in 2017.
McKeag brings the 2019 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Track & Field Championships to a close for the Gophers on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. CT in the men's weight throw.
