Gophers Medal at World Championships

Six Gophers won gold with Team USA while Noora Raty took home silver with Finland at the 2019 IIHF Women's World Championships.
ESPOO, Finland -- Six Gophers won gold with Team USA while one took home silver with Finland as all seven University of Minnesota representatives played in the gold-medal game at the 2019 IIHF Women's World Championships. The U.S. defeated Finland, 2-1, in a shootout to decide the championship game as the Red, White, and Blue claimed its fifth consecutive world championship gold medal and the program's eighth in the last nine tournaments.
Redshirt senior Kelly Pannek joined University of Minnesota alumnae Lee Stecklein, Megan Bozek, Hannah Brandt, Dani Cameranesi, and Amanda Kessel on the U.S. Women's National Team while fellow Minnesota alumna Noora Raty represented tournament host Finland. Gophers associate head coach Joel Johnson served as an assistant coach for the U.S. at the tournament as well.
The U.S. finished the tournament with a perfect record for the fourth consecutive Women's Worlds dating back to 2015, and its sixth time overall. Meanwhile, Finland won the country's first-ever silver medal and became the first European nation to play in the final at the tournament after a semifinal win over Canada.
All six Gophers got on the score sheet for Team USA during the tournament, led by Cameranesi's seven points (3g-4a) in seven games played. Kessel (3g-2a) and Pannek (2g-3a) recorded five points each while Bozek (2g-2a) and Stecklein (2g-2a) each tallied four points, including Stecklein's first-ever goals in IIHF tournament play. Brandt logged one assist in the tournament as well. Meanwhile, Raty had a .937 save percentage and a 2.20 goals against average with one shutout in seven games played for Finland.
