MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota men's golf team sits in sixth place after playing 36 holes Saturday at the Hawkeye Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa.
Competing at the par-71 Finkbine Golf Course, the Golden Gophers shot a 4-under 280 in Saturday morning's opening round and then came back with a 3-under 281 in round two in the afternoon. Sitting at 7-under with a 561, the Gophers trail host-Iowa, which leads at 29 strokes under par.
Junior Thomas Longbella and sophomore Angus Flanagan were the top golfers on the day for Minnesota as the duo finished tied for 11th at 4-under with a 138.
For the first time this season, Longbella had consecutive rounds under par. He opened with a season-best 68 in round one, including six birdies. Five of those six birdies came in his first eight holes, including four straight from holes 15-18. He followed that with a 1-under 70 in round two that featured five birdies.
Flanagan joined Longbella by going under par in each of the first two rounds as he fired back-to-back rounds of 69. Flanagan had four birdies in each round, including three in a four-hole stretch on
holes 13-16.
Kansas' Charlie Hillier leads all individuals as he sits 10-under with a 132.
One stroke behind Longbella and Flanagan was sophomore Evan Long, who came in tied for 16th with a 3-under 139. Long also went under par in each round with a 69-70 performance through 36 holes. His opening round 69 tied for the best 18-hole score of his career, which he set at the Furman Intercollegiate last month. He had four birdies in each round.
Freshman Harry Plowman-Ollington is tied for 48th at 4-over with a 146. Starting at hole 10 in round one, he was 3-over through nine holes but came back to shoot an even-par 36 on the front nine thanks to three birdies. He was 1-over with a 72 in round two and made three birdies during the round.
Fellow freshman Lincoln Johnson is one of three golfers tied for 68th at 9-over-par. After a tough opening round that saw Johnson shoot an 8-over 79, he bounced back to post a 1-over 72 in round two.
In addition to the five Gophers competing for the team score, Minnesota also had a pair competing as individuals in freshman Will Grevlos and redshirt sophomore Gus Minkin.
Grevlos had two of the best rounds of his young career and is currently tied for 33rd at 1-over with a 143. Grevlos tied a career-best mark when he shot a 73 in round one, highlighted by an eagle on the 11th hole. He then bested that performance with a 1-under 70 in round two. Sitting at 2-over through seven holes, Grevlos embarked on a stretch of four birdies over the next 10 holes.
Minkin was also in action as an individual and he posted the best 18-hole score for the Gophers this spring. Tied for 38th at 2-over with a 144, he began his day with a 5-over 76 then responded with a 3-under 68 in round two. Previously no Gopher had gone lower than 69 this spring. It was also the best round of Minkin's career, bettering a 70 he had at this year's Gopher Invitational. Starting on the 18th hole, Minkin had three birdies in a five-hole stretch on the front nine then closed with two more birdies between holes 11-15.
The Hawkeye Invitational wraps up Sunday. The final round begins at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start as the Gophers will go off on holes 5-7. Meanwhile, Grevlos will begin on the 15th hole and Minkin will start on No. 16.
