MINNEAPOLIS – Sophomore Angus Flanagan posted the best finish by a Minnesota men's golfer this spring, while the team posted its second top-five finish in its last three tournaments as the Hawkeye Invitational concluded Sunday in Iowa City, Iowa.
Competing at the par-71 Finkbine Golf Course, Flanagan finished tied for ninth as he fired a final round score of 3-under 68 with five birdies and an eagle on No. 15. The round of 68 tied teammates Thomas Longbella and Gus Minkin for the best round by a Gopher this spring, while it also gave Flanagan a 54-hole score of 206, which was 7-under-par.
In addition, it was the best 54-hole score by a Gopher this season and the lowest score to par this year. Flanagan owned those two marks previously as he was 3-under with a 207 at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate in September. Flanagan leads the Golden Gophers with nine rounds under par this year, six tournaments as the team's top finisher and two top-10 finishes.
As a team, Minnesota shot an even-par 284 in Sunday's final round. That helped the Gophers move up one spot from the second round, where they had been in sixth place, to tie with UMKC. The Gophers' three-round total left them at 7-under-par with an 845, their best score to par this season.
Host-Iowa was the team champion with a 43-under-par score of 809, while the Hawkeyes' Matthew Walker and Alex Schaake were the top individuals at the tournament as they tied at 14-under-par with dueling totals of 199.
Junior Thomas Longbella had his best finish of the season with a tie for 16th and 3-under score of 210. Those numbers bettered his previous best finish of a tie for 18th at the season-opening Gopher Invitational and 1-under-par finish at the Maui Jim. Longbella had three birdies in Sunday's final round, all of which came in the first 11 holes, as he posted a 1-over 72.
Tied for 16th after round two, sophomore Evan Long struggled Sunday with a 6-over 77 to end up in a tie for 37th. His 54-hole score was 216, which left him three shots over par for the tournament.
Freshman Harry Plowman-Ollington was three strokes behind Long, finishing tied for 48th at 219, six shots over par. He posted a 2-over 73 in Sunday's final round that featured five birdies, but also included three bogeys and a pair of double bogeys.
Fellow freshman Lincoln Johnson had his best round of the weekend with an even-par 71. With that, he was able to move up 10 spots from round two to finish in a tie for 58th at 9-over with a 222. Sunday's round featured five birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey.
Two Gophers were also competing as individuals in freshman Will Grevlos and sophomore Gus Minkin.
Grevlos' 54-hole score of 218 was a personal best, and he finished tied for 43rd at five shots over par. He posted a 4-over 75 on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Minkin was 7-over for the tournament at 220, the lowest 54-hole score of his career. He was 5-over Sunday with a 76 and finished tied for 52nd.
The Hawkeye Invitational was the final tournament in the regular season for Minnesota. The team now turns its attention to next weekend's Big Ten Championships at the Philadelphia Cricket Club in Flourtown, Pa. Tournament action starts Friday and runs through Sunday.
