MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota sophomore Angus Flanagan is the leader in the clubhouse and the Gophers men's golf team is tied for second place place following Friday's opening round of the 2019 Big Ten Men's Golf Championship in Flourtown, Pa.

Taking place at Philadelphia Cricket Club's Wissahickon Course, which is playing as a par-70 at 7,119 yards, Flanagan posted a 5-under-par 65 Friday to pace the field. Not only does Flanagan hold a three-stroke lead over Purdue's Jarle Volden, there are only two other golfers under par entering Saturday's second round.

The 5-under 65 tied for the eighth-best round in program history with Flanagan becoming just the 13th Gopher ever to shoot a 65 or better. In recording the lowest round ever by a Gopher at the Big Tens, Friday's performance also bettered Flanagan's previous best round of a 4-under 66 that he had in the opening round of the Maui Jim Intercollegiate this September.

Flanagan, who entered the tournament as the Gophers' leading scorer with an average round of 71.71, set the tone early with an eagle on No. 12, his second hole of the day. After a pair of pars, he birdied No. 15 to get to 3-under, and though a bogey on No. 18 put him back at 2-under, he used consecutive birdies on the second and third holes to move to 4-under. He then rattled off six straight pars before a fourth birdie on the par-3 10th.

The effort from Flanagan helped the Gophers shoot a 7-over 287 on the day. That leaves them tied with Illinois and five shots behind Purdue.

A trio of Gophers, junior Thomas Longbella, sophomore Evan Long and freshman Lincoln Johnson, are all tied for 28th after shooting a 4-over 74.

Longbella was 2-over on both the front and back nines, shooting a consistent 37 on each side. Both nines featured a birdie, bogey and double bogey to go with six pars.

Long found success early with a birdie on No. 12 before back-to-back bogeys on holes 17 and 18 put him in the black. A double bogey on No. 6 dropped him to 3-over, while a bogey on No. 10 closed out his round.

Competing in his first ever Big Ten Championship, Johnson birdied his opening hole but finished with a total of four bogeys on the back nine. He had an additional birdie on No. 2 that saw him get to 1-over, and he finished 1-over on the front side.

Fellow freshman Harry Plowman-Ollington was also making his Big Ten Championship debut as he fired an 8-over 78 to close out the first round in a tie for 55th. Like Flanagan and Long, Plowman-Ollington found success on No. 12 with a birdie. It was one of two birdies on the day for him, also posting one on No. 7.

The second round of the 2019 Big Ten Championship begins Saturday morning at 8 a.m. CT. Plowman-Ollington will lead things off for the Gophers when he tees off at 8:45 a.m. Live scoring is available at Golfstat.com.
