MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota men's golf team is tied atop the leaderboard heading into the final round of the Big Ten Men's Golf Championship after the conclusion of second round play Saturday at the Philadelphia Cricket Club's Wissahickon Course in Flourtown, Pa.

The Golden Gophers are tied with four-time defending champion Illinois at 30-over-par as both teams shot a 23-over 303 on Saturday to produce a 36-hole total of 590. The course played much more difficult in round two as the 303 marked the second best round of the day, while the highest score of any team in round one was 302.

Minnesota is looking for its ninth Big Ten title in program history and its first since 2014. Since 2009, no teams other than the Illini or Gophers have won a conference crown.

After leading the tournament through the first round thanks to a course-tying record 65, sophomore Angus Flanagan is currently in second place at 2-over with a 142. He shot a 7-over 77 Saturday and now trails Michigan State's Donnie Trosper, who was the only player not over par in round two, by two shots. Flanagan had four bogeys on the front nine, got one stroke back with a birdie on No. 10 but then ended his day with four more bogeys on the back nine.

Flanagan is in position to become the ninth Gopher to win an individual title, last done by Jose Mendez in 2014.

Sophomore Evan Long jumped 18 spots from 28th into 10th after a 3-over 73 and is now 6-over at 146 for the tournament. His round started unfavorably with consecutive double bogeys to start the day, but he had birdies on two of the next five holes and finished 3-over for the front nine. His back nine was even better as he had three birdies to cancel out three bogeys.

Two shots behind Long is junior Thomas Longbella. He was also tied for 28th after round two and is now up to 14th following a 5-over 75. He's 9-over at 149 through 36 holes. Longbella got into the red with a birdie on No. 3 but recorded four straight bogeys after that before another birdie on the ninth hole closed out his front nine. He had six pars and three bogeys on the back.

Freshman Harry Plowman-Ollington shot an 8-over 78 for the second straight day to climb seven spots into a tie for 48th. Now 16-over for the tournament, Plowman-Ollington was 7-over on the front nine but settled down on the back and was just one shot over par, including a birdie on No. 11.

Fellow freshman Lincoln Johnson was part of a trio of Gophers tied for 28th after round one but is now in a tie for 48th. He dropped after a 12-over 82 Saturday and is now 16-over at 156 through 36 holes. Johnson did manage two birdies during his round.

Paired with Illinois and third-place Purdue, the Gophers will tee off in Sunday's final round beginning at 8:25 a.m. CT. Live scoring is available on GolfStat.com.
