Flanagan Shares Big Ten Golf Title
4/28/2019 3:21:00āÆPM | Men's Golf
MINNEAPOLIS ā Minnesota sophomore Angus Flanagan shot an even-par 70 Sunday to share the Big Ten Men's Golf individual title at the Philadelphia Cricket Club's Wissahickon Course in Flourtown, Pa.
Flanagan became the ninth Gopher in program history to claim individual honors as he finished with a 2-over 212 over 54 holes, tying Illinois' Adrien Dumont de Chassart, who shot a 4-under 66 Sunday. Flanagan, named to the All-Big Ten Championship Team, is the first Gopher to win since Jose Mendez in 2014.
"It hasn't really sunk in yet," Flanagan said. "I felt pretty strong in all areas of my game, especially my putting. That definitely saved me on some holes. Obviously Friday everything was working well and even my 77 yesterday was pretty good considering I think the average score was 78. I just feel about as confident as I ever have on the course."
A native of Woking, England, Flanagan opened the final round with a birdie but bogeyed No. 5 to move back to even par. Back-to-back birdies on the ninth and 10th holes put him back in the red at 2-under-par, and he held that score thanks to a six consecutive pars through No. 16. His round ended with back-to-back bogeys on holes 17 and 18, but it was still enough to claim the 10th title in program history.
Flanagan's weekend began with a 5-under 65 Friday, which was a career low, tied for the eighth-best round in program history, was the lowest round ever by a Gopher at the Big Tens and also tied a course record. He followed that with a 7-over 77 Saturday before his 70 Sunday.
"Angus was nothing short of spectacular," associate head coach Justin Smith said. "He broke a bunch of records Friday, and then yesterday he played just as solid in so many ways but the conditions were so brutal that a couple things get a way from you then it just piles up. He played an absolutely professional round of golf today.Ā I know he wasn't thrilled with how his round ended, but he put himself in a position to still be a champion.
"All facets of his game are spot-on right now. We saw that and knew he was building this spring. It's just a testament to how hard he has worked and where his mindset is. He's that good, and it's going to be fun to see him do it for a little while longer this year."
As a team, Minnesota finished in ninth place, its best finish at the event since tying for third in 2015. The Gophers shot a 304 on Sunday and finished with a three-round total of 894. Illinois claimed the team title for the fifth year in a row with an 868.
Sophomore Evan Long tied for 39th after shooting a 9-over 79 Sunday, giving him a 54-hole total of 16-over 226. He had two birdies on the front nine but was 2-over at the turn and was seven shots over par on the back nine.
Junior Thomas Longbella tied for 48th following a 10-over 80 in the final round. That left him at +19 with a 229 for the tournament. He birdied No. 7 but was 3-over on the front nine and 7-over on the back.
Freshman Lincoln Johnson was 6-over on the day with a 76, highlighted by a birdie on No. 14, and ended in 55th place. He was +22 at 232 for the tournament.
Fellow freshman Harry Plowman-Ollington was three shots back of Johnson, finishing tied for 61st with a 25-over 235. Plowman-Ollington had a 9-over 79 Sunday, including a birdie on the ninth hole.
As Big Ten co-champion, Flanagan will learn his NCAA Regional destination on May 1 at 8 p.m. CT on Golf Channel.
Big Ten Network will debut coverage of the Big Ten Men's Golf Championships on Tuesday, May 7 at 4 p.m. CT.
