Flanagan Begins Play at NCAA Regional Monday

5/12/2019 11:23:00 AM | Men's Golf

MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota sophomore Angus Flanagan is set to start competition at the Austin Regional of the 2019 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships.

The 54-hole competition runs Monday through Wednesday at the University of Texas Golf Club, which is playing as a par-71 at 7,355 yards. There are 14 teams and five individuals, including Flanagan, competing at the Regional; the low five teams and the low individual not on those five qualifying teams will advance to the NCAA Championship at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark., May 24-29.

Flanagan is scheduled to tee off on the front nine Monday beginning at 9:53 a.m. Other individuals competing include McNeese State's Blake Elliott, Oral Roberts' Cody Burrows, Rice's Jake Benson and Jeffery Peters from Saint Peter's.

In addition to host-Texas, which is No. 6 in the latest Golfweek Coaches Poll, the field consists of four additional ranked teams in No. 7 USC, No. 18 Pepperdine and No. 19 Clemson, as well as Arkansas and TCU, which are both receiving votes. Iowa, Marquette, San Jose State, Saint Mary's, Sam Houston State, UMKC, Prairie View A&M and Army round out the field.

Flanagan earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals by winning a share of the Big Ten title last weekend. He was also named to the All-Big Ten Second Team for his efforts.

On the season, he has participated in nine of the team's 10 tournaments and recorded 1,933 strokes over 27 rounds, good for a scoring average of 71.59. Not only does that lead the team by nearly two strokes, it's currently the third best in program history for one season. Only former NCAA champion James McLean had lower season averages in 1998-99 (70.89) and 1997-98 (71.39).

A native of Woking, England, Flanagan also leads the Gophers this season in rounds under par (10), tournaments leading the team (7), best finish to par (-7), low score for 54 holes (206), most top-10 finishes (3) and most top-20 finishes (4).

With Flanagan's selection to the Austin Regional, the Gophers have had at least one player in NCAA Regionals for 26 of the past 28 years. Most recently, Justin Doeden participated for the Gophers in 2017.
