Gophers Wrap Up Duke Invitational

The Golden Gopher track & field team competed in a full day of competition on Saturday at the Duke Invitational.

DURHAM, N.C. – After severe weather halted action at the Duke Invitational on Friday, the University of Minnesota track & field program made the most of its chances on Saturday with six event titles between the men and women of Minnesota.Ā 

Duke Invitational Women's HighlightsĀ 
The Minnesota women won four titles as Lorean Murray won triple jump, Kiley Sabin won shot put, Amira Young won the 200m dash, and Megan Hasz won the 5,000m during a full day of competition at the Duke Invitational on Saturday.

Murray won triple jump with a career-best mark of 13.02m (42-08.75), improving on her fourth-ranked mark among all-time Gophers. She also posted a career-best mark in long jump, placing fifth at the meet and moving into eighth in Minnesota history. Meanwhile, Hannah Morris led the Gophers in long jump with a runner-up finish (6.16m, 20-02.50).

The Gopher women took the top two spots in shot put as Sabin won with a throw of 16.23m (53-03.00) and Tess Keyzers finished as runner-up (16.06m, 52-08.25). Sabin also posted a runner-up showing in the discus with a mark of 48.00m (157-06) while Ryan Crotty finished second in javelin (44.37m, 145-07) to round out the women's top performances in the field events.

On the track, Young claimed the 200m dash title in 23.84 seconds and Megan Hasz posted a career-best time of 15:58.85 to win the 5,000m and improve on her second-ranked time in Gophers' history.

Meanwhile, Erin Huls led the Gophers with a runner-up finish in the 400m hurdles where she clocked a PR of 59.24 seconds to improve on her eighth-ranked time in Minnesota history.

Lindsey Greenlund and Abby Kohut-Jackson also recorded all-time top-10 times in the 3,000m steeplechase. Greenlund ran 10:28.87 to place third at the meet and move into ninth among all-time Gophers while Kohut-Jackson clocked a time of 10:29.06 for fourth at the Duke Invitational and 10th in Minnesota history.

Bethany Hasz ran 4:24.45 to finish as runner-up in her first 1,500m race of the season; her time was less than two seconds off her career-best time of 4:23.07.

Duke Invitational Men's Highlights
Minnesota's throwers won a pair of men's event titles on Saturday at Morris Williams Stadium with Kaleb Siekmeier claiming the discus title and Jonathan Tharaldsen winning the shot put title.Ā 

Siekmeier picked up his first discus win of the season with a personal record on Saturday, hitting 55.12 meters (180-10 ft.) on his sixth and final throw of the competition. Siekmeier added a seventh-place finish in the men's hammer throw at 56.34 meters (184-10 ft.) as the Gophers carried four of the top-10 finishers with Kieran McKeag finishing third (65.29 meters, 214-02 ft.), Jon Nerdal coming in fourth (64.92 meters, 213-00 ft.) and Connor Rousemiller finishing fifth (57.50 meters, 188-08 ft.).Ā 

Jonathan Tharaldsen also had a notable throws win for the Maroon & Gold, setting a Duke Invitational record in the men's shot put at 18.82 meters (61-09 ft.). The performance stands as Tharaldsen's first outdoor shot put win of the season.Ā 

Additionally, the Maroon & Gold added a pair of runner-up showings on Saturday in the men's 400 meters and the men's 1,500 meters. Alec Basten finished second in the men's 1,500 meters with a time of 3:50.66. Minnesota actually carried two of the top-three runners in the men's 400 meters with Elliott Davis finishing second at 47.34 while Ben Psicihulis came in third at 47.74.Ā 

Zach Nelson earned a pair of top-10 finishes for the Gophers, placing third in the men's 100 meters and fourth in the men's 200 meters.Ā 

Next Up: Minnesota Twilight Meets and Drake Relays
The Gophers get back to work on campus with the Minnesota Women's Twilight Meet on Wednesday, April 24 while the Minnesota's Men's Twilight Meet is scheduled for Wednesday, May 1. Minnesota is also set to compete at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, on Friday, April 26 and Saturday, April 27, and members of the women's team will also compete at Macalester's Janis Rider Invitational on Saturday, April 27.
