Minnesota's 2022 non-conference opponents will be Colorado, New Mexico State and Western Illinois
The University of Minnesota football team announced today that it will host Western Illinois on Sept. 10, 2022 at TCF Bank Stadium.Â
The addition of this game now completes Minnesota's 2022 schedule. The Gophers will host New Mexico State, Western Illinois, Colorado, Iowa, Rutgers, Purdue and Northwestern in 2022 and will play on the road at Illinois, Nebraska, Michigan State, Penn State and Wisconsin.Â
Minnesota will play its first five games of the 2022 season at home as it faces New Mexico State (Sept. 1), Western Illinois (Sept. 10), Colorado (Sept. 17), Iowa (Sept. 24) and Rutgers (Oct. 1). The last time the Gophers opened the season with five straight homes games was 1933. Minnesota went 3-0-2 in those games as it beat South Dakota State, Pittsburgh and Iowa and tied Indiana and Purdue.Â
The 2022 game against Colorado is a second half of a home-and-home series, as the Gophers will travel to Boulder, Colo., in 2021.Â
Minnesota is 1-0 all-time against Western Illinois. The Maroon and Gold topped the Leathernecks 29-12 at home in 2013.Â
