Minnesota Takes on Baton Rouge Regional
4/3/2019 11:50:00 AM | Gymnastics
The University of Minnesota women's gymnastics team travels to Baton Rouge, La. this week to participate in the 2019 NCAA Regionals (April 4-6) at one of four sites across the country. ESPN3/SECNetwork+ will provide coverage of all four sessions of this weekend's meet. Host sites for Regionals along with Baton Rouge include Ann Arbor, Mich. Corvallis, Ore, and Athens, Ga.Â
The Gophers hope to earn one of the two qualifying spots from the Baton Rouge Regional to compete at the NCAA Championships in Fort Worth, Texas on April 19-20. In order to qualify for the national championships, the No. 11 Maroon and Gold must be one of the two highest-scoring teams at the Super Regional on April 6.Â
In order to advance to the Super Regional, Minnesota must be one of the top two teams from the afternoon session on Day Two (April 5), during which they will face off against Utah, BYU and Arkansas. In addition to the two advancing teams, the top all-arounder and top event finisher on each event (from a non-qualifying team) at each Super Regional will move on to the NCAA Championships as well.
The afternoon session on April 5 will begin at 2:00 p.m. CT and the Golden Gophers will rotate beam-floor-vault-bars, allowing Minnesota to end on the team's most consistent event. The Gophers are ranked in the top-15 in the NCAA on every apparatus, highlighted by the No. 9 ranking on the Uneven Bars. Two Gophers gymnasts hold top-10 individual rankings as Lexy Ramler is No. 9 in the all-around and No. 4 on the balance beam while Ivy Lu is No. 10 on bars.Â
The Super Regional will take place on Saturday, April 6 at 7:00 p.m. CT and will feature the two highest scoring teams from each session on Friday. If Minnesota advances to Saturday's competition they will either rotate floor-vault-bars-beam (winner of afternoon session) or bars-beam-floor-vault (runner-up of afternoon session).
