IOWA CITY, Iowa – Obsa Ali became the first University of Minnesota runner to repeat as the Big Ten men's 3,000 meter steeplechase champion on Saturday night as the redshirt senior highlighted a successful day of competition at the 2019 Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
The Maroon & Gold men are tied for fourth after nine events with 36 points while the women's team sits in second through eight events with 42 points.
Men's Day Two Highlights
Obsa Ali and the men's 3,000 meter steeplechase group led the way for the Maroon & Gold men on Saturday at Iowa's Francis X. Cretzmeyer Track as the group picked up 17 points in the final event of the night behind a trio of scorers.
Ali, the defending NCAA and Big Ten champion in the event heading into the competition, repeated as the conference champion behind a time of 8:46.82 while Alec Basten finished fourth at 8:52.40 and Jack Manderscheid added a seventh-place showing for Minnesota at 9:02.60. Saturday's title marked Minnesota's fifth overall Big Ten title in the men's 3,000 steeplechase with Ali going back-to-back over the last two seasons following Don Timm's title in 1971, John Kromer's win in 1984 and Eric Pierce's victory in 1999.
Meanwhile, Jonathan Tharaldsen finished second in the men's shot put on Saturday at 19.93 meters (65-04.75 ft.) – a performance that is now tied for second all-time at Minnesota (Karl Erickson, 2006). Only Ron Backes has thrown farther in the men's shot put for the Maroon & Gold (20.92 meters, 68-07.50, 1986). Tharaldsen actually hit a pair of personal records in Saturday's competition, recording a toss of 19.37 meters (65-04.75 ft.) in the trials that initially moved him into fourth in program history before clearing his collegiate best in the finals on his fifth attempt of the day.
Additionally, Elliott Davis qualified for the men's 400 meter final on Sunday after running 47.24 in the prelims while Dawson LaRance also moved on in the men's 800 meter prelims with a time of 1:49.95. Lucas Trapp also advanced in the men's 800 meters after it was ruled he was interfered with during the prelims.
