MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota sophomore Angus Flanagan has climbed the leaderboard on day two of the NCAA Regional at the University of Texas Golf Club (7,355 yards, par 71) in Austin, Texas.
After finishing round one in a tie for 46th after posting a 5-over-par 76, Flanagan fired a 1-under-par 70 Tuesday to vault up the leaderboard. He's now in a six-way tie for 27th with a 36-hole total of 146, four shots over par.
The low five teams and the low individual not on those five qualifying teams will advance to the NCAA Championship at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark., May 24-29.
After round two, the low individual not among the top five teams is USC's Sam Kim, who is two-under at 140, six strokes better than Flanagan. Including Kim, there are currently nine golfers ahead of Flanagan for the individual qualifying spot.
There is currently a five-way tie for first place among individuals at 138, four shots under par. Three hail from host-Texas (Steven Chervony, Pierceson Coody and Cole Hammer) while Pepperdine (Joe Highsmith and Joshua McCarthy) boast the other two golfers.
The first-place Longhorns are at 16-under par, distancing themselves in the team portion from Clemson and Pepperdine, both at even-par, TCU (+4) and Arkansas (+5).
Out of 75 golfers at the Regional, Flanagan joined 11 others Tuesday by posting a round under par. He had three birdies and two bogeys on the front nine, while on the back nine he matched a pair of birdies with a pair of bogeys to come out even.
Flanagan got things started on Tuesday with a birdie on No. 1, but dropped back to even par with a bogey on No. 2. He then sank a 10-foot birdie putt on No. 6 to get back into the red, but like earlier in the round, a bogey immediately followed to put him back at even. However, he birdied the ninth hole to post a 34 on the par-35 front nine.
Another birdie on No. 11 got Flanagan to 2-under, his lowest score to par in the Regional. A bogey two holes later cost him a stroke, but he rebounded with his fifth and final birdie of the day on No. 14 to get back to 2-under. Another bogey on the 16th hole moved him back to 1-under, and that's where he finished as he closed out the round with consecutive pars on the 17th and 18th holes.
Wednesday's final round will have Flanagan tee off at the same time he has in rounds one and two, 9:53 a.m. on the front nine.
