MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota's Destiny Pitts and Barbora Tomancova have each been chosen to participate in international competition this summer.
Pitts is one of 36 athletes that will take part in trials for the 2019 U.S. Pan American Games Women's Basketball Team. Athletes eligible for this team must be U.S. citizens who currently are enrolled as a full-time collegiate student with remaining eligibility for the 2019-20 school year.
Trials to select the 12-member team will take place May 16-20 at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. The team members will return to Colorado Springs for training camp July 23-Aug. 5, before competing in the women's basketball tournament at the 2019 Pan American Games from Aug. 6-10 in Lima, Peru.
Pitts just finished her sophomore season in the Maroon and Gold averaging 16.3 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. She ranked fifth in team single-season history in 3-pointers attempted (230) and free throw percentage (.838) and was sixth in 3-pointers made (81). At one point, she posted eight straight games with at least 20 points, the longest stretch by a Gopher since Rachel Banham had a streak of 20 in a row to end the 2015-16 season.
A native of Detroit, Mich., Pitts was named to the All-Big Ten First Team by the league's media and to the All-Big Ten Second Team by the coaches. She was a three-time Big Ten Player of the Week Honor Roll selection and was a 2019 Academic All-Big Ten honoree.
Meanwhile, Tomancova has been chosen to represent her home country, Czech Republic, at the FIBA U20 European Championship in Klatovy, Czech Republic, August 3-11.
Czech Republic is one 16 teams in competition and has been placed into a group with Poland, Russia and Sweden. After round-robin group play, teams will be matched up by results (Ex. A1 vs. B4, B1 vs. A4, etc.,), and the winners of those games will move on to the quarterfinals.
A native of Brno, Tomancova has previously competed for Czech Republic at the U18 European Championship in 2017, U17 World Championship in 2016 and U16 European Championship in 2015.
Tomancova played in six games for Minnesota during her recently completed freshman season, missing the final 22 games due to injury. She averaged 2.3 points and 2.3 rebounds in 12.2 minutes of action per game. She had a career-high five points and six rebounds against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Nov. 20 and then matched her career-high point total against Incarnate Word on Dec. 5.
