Gophers Among B1G's High Seeds to Fall on Day One

5/23/2019 12:53:00 AM | Baseball

OMAHA, Neb. – On a day of upsets to start the Big Ten Tournament, the fourth-seeded Gopher Baseball could not escape the trend falling 8-2 against fifth-seed Nebraska in a first round match-up at T.D. Ameritrade Park on Wednesday night.

With Minnesota (26-26) missing their ace to begin the postseason, Patrick Fredrickson (2-3) earned the game one start coming off of a pair of successful outings since returning to the line-up following his own injury earlier this season. Nebraska (29-20) jumped all over the right-hander, taking advantage of an error by the Gophers on a fly ball to shallow center to eventually plate three runs, but just one earned, in the top of the first.

The Maroon & Gold answered in the bottom of the second after Eli Wilson was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning before Jordan Kozicky brought him home with a two-out RBI single against Matt Waldron (6-3).

The Cornhuskers sent nine batters to the plate in a five-run third inning, extending the lead out to 8-1. Angelo Altavilla had back-to-back hits to start his day for Nebraska, driving in three runs. Fredrickson ended his day after 2.2 innings, surrendering eight runs, six earned, on four hits, two walks, and two hit batters. He collected three strikeouts on the day.

Freshman J.P. Massey entered in relief in the third and settled in on the mound for Minnesota, working 2.1 innings, collecting three strikeouts without surrendering a hit. Massey, Bubba Horton, and Jake Stevenson combined for 6.1 hitless, shutout innings out of the Gopher bullpen, but Waldron continued to dictate the game on the other side of the ledger. He finished his day with 7.1 innings pitched, allowing two earned on six hits while striking out nine.

The right-hander handed the ball to twin brother Mike Waldron with two on in the eighth, and Zack Raabe greeted the reliever with an RBI single, scoring Riley Smith to cut the lead by one. Minnesota would get no closer on the day despite loading the bases in the inning.

NOTABLE
Massey has not allowed a run in his last 9.2 innings on the mound nor a hit in his last 5.1 innings … eight runs allowed including six earned were both career highs for Fredrickson … Raabe extended his hitting streak to 10 games with his single in the eighth … Eduardo Estrada, Jr. ended his team-leading stretch of 11 consecutive games reaching base.

UP NEXT
Minnesota now moves to an elimination game against top-seeded No. 21 Indiana (36-20) on Thursday afternoon. The Hoosiers took 2-of-3 from the Gophers in Bloomington during the regular season. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. airing live on Big Ten Network and streaming on BTN2Go.
