Gophers Depart for Summer Seasons

MINNEAPOLIS – Following the conclusion of the 2019 season, Gopher Baseball student athletes will continue sharpening their skills in collegiate summer baseball leagues across the nation.
Currently, 27 players from Minnesota are placed on teams across seven different leagues, including 10 playing locally in the Northwoods League, seven in the Cape Cod League, four in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League, two in the Expedition league, and one each in the California, Jayhawk, and Sunbelt Leagues. Additionally, rising junior pitcher Max Meyer will be competing once again for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team.
The Gophers will send three players to the defending champions of the Northwoods League, the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders in Ryan Duffy, Drew Hmielewski, and Bubba Horton, making his return to the team. The Hyannis Harbor Hawks and Cotuit Kettleers will each have three players from Minnesota on their rosters this summer on the Cape, while the Saugerties Stallions of the Perfect Game League will host four players. Incoming Gophers who have already found a spot in the collegiate leagues include junior transfer Ronnie Sweeny (Cotuit), freshmen Kyle Bork (Alpharetta/Sunbelt), Michael Gurka (Western Nebraska/Pioneer), and Trent Schoeberl (Saugerties).
Recent Gopher graduate Jeff Fasching accepted a position as the pitching coach for Saugerties. Head student manager Thomas Knauss will serve as the player development intern with the Wareham Gateman in Cape Cod.
